Personal Narrative: My Trip To Metropolitan Museum

Improved Essays
For my Spanish cultural event, I went to Metropolitan Museum of Art with my friend Emily during the spring break. It is located in upper Manhattan near central park. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is also known as “The Met.” This Museum have a great quality collections of art in different floors, there is four floors in the museum. However, the third and fourth floor was through reservation so I wasn’t allowed to go there. Even though we got lost since the place was huge we were thrilled to see some collaboration along the way. The staffs were very welcoming and provided us a map and help use with directions.
When I went to the first floor, I saw exhibits of the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa, the Pacific Islands, and North, Central, and South.

While heading to Grammy Museum I was able to arrive before it open, I waited for about 15 minutes outside. While waiting I was able to walk around and see the Grammy Awards that have been won throughout the years. They were displayed on the sidewalk heading towards the Museum. I was able to identity some bands and artists that I knew such as; Ray Charles, Norah Jones as well as Green Day. I was truly surprised to have seen these names displayed.…

My experience with the museum actually started off quite awkwardly. I visited the museum by myself on a Sunday afternoon, and I was actually quite scared of even entering it. The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…

Going to two of the most popular museums in New York City to learn about African art and history did not seem of interest to me until I was forced to by the Summer Class I was taking at Pace. In my mind I kept thinking it was going to be a waste of my time when I could be enjoying my summer weekend in the city. However, I was mistaken and my breath was taken away from our history of humans to the African tradition and how it impacts us. This project showed me the connection of art and history in Africa. When I arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art I did not realize that since its summer there are a bunch of tourists who also want to see the worlds most famous museum.…

In New York museums are buildings whose histories are tied into the fabric of the city. While some buildings of a different program might slide under the radar, a new museum could not be commissioned in the city without fanfare or skepticism or protest. The controversy can be credited to the fact that even in our contemporary time critics, architects, artists, and the sponsoring agents, and even the public all have different expectations on what a museum should be. It has been a challenge to break from the formula set by the neo-classical fine arts museums while still adjusting to changes in: program, what modern art is, and how it is viewed. And not just anyone is privileged enough to receive such an honor; firms commissioned to designs…
