One morning, sunny day I was ready to go to Kansas City not expecting anything ever bad would happen. Everyone packed up and we headed towards Kansas City, we were going to visit my cousins. When we got there we got our stuff and unpacked upstairs in the guest rooms, my older cousin left to party the night before, but he didn’t come back. After a while of talking the kids got bored and ran up the stairs to the rooms where everyone was either playing games or on their phones texting. I looked for my cousin, he wasn't there and then I saw the red eyes of my aunt and I knew something was not right. I asked my dad what had happened, he said “Armin had died, he was shot in the head 3 times and he would if survived if the ambulance drove faster.” After my dad was done talking I was in tears I couldn't breath I didn't know what was happening, I couldn't believe it he was my hero, my best friend, he was my favorite cousin. When the funeral happened, we didn't get to see him. I wish I could of seen him one last time and said goodbye, but they wouldn't let anyone see him because he was bleeding too much, still to this day say he is my hero my best friend and always will forever be in my

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

Ah, Chicago, the Windy City, a famed metropolis known for its wholesome American values, deep-dish pizza, and its friendly, carefree, community. Nothing quite exemplifies the Founding Fathers’ vision of America like the Second City. Chicago is the only place where one can truly appreciate the equality and justice generations of Americans have fought to achieve. My journey began as many Chicagoans days do, to the hymn of police sirens and traffic.…

This summer I had the privilege to travel to Atchison, Kansas, where I attended the Life Teen Leadership Conference at Benedictine College. This conference was not only the best week I have ever experienced, but it was a week filled with many Catholic teens joined together in learning how we can live out our Catholic faith, and what it means to be a leader at school, home, and church. During this conference I encountered a bible verse that opened my eyes and truly resonated with my heart, making me rethink my life and how I was living it. “Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple” Luke 14:27. I had heard this verse before at church many years before this event, but in that moment at LTLC, the world stopped…

LONG ASS DAY The ride to Austin seemed to last a lifetime. I was sprawled in the backseat sleeping the hours away until we finally arrived into the hot city. My mom, sister and I unsure of what to do, decided to just park the car and walk around. I suggested going to a botanical garden even though the heat was almost unbearable and we were all pretty tired. The first thing we did was go to the gift shop to get a map to explore the garden.…

It was the middle of November, my family and I took a road trip to New York City. As we arrived to the city, we had to wait a few minutes to cross the George Washington Bridge because there was a lot of traffic. After waiting for a while we drove across the bridge and as we made our way across I saw a lot of skyscrapers, including the New World Trade Center and the Empire State Building. We arrived to a place where we had to wait for more than an hour to get on a ferry boat that would take us to the Statue of Liberty.…

Over the summer break, my family and I went to San Antonio, Texas. I remember the first day there, I had greeted my family there and talked about everything that had happened since we last saw each others. We had decided to the Guadalupe river, the water was frigid cold and awfully deep. I recall standing up on my two own feet and the water had passed my body. The next day, I had to practice for my cousin’s sweet sixteen, I was in her code of honor and I had to remember all the steps before her party.…
