My Jamaica Experience

Our trip to Jamaica was full of excitement, adventure, and delicious foods. Plus interesting sights and sounds. The learning experience we gained was one that we will remember for a life time. We went there as a vacation but the awareness to the island life of the people really put things in perspective of my life.

We flew out of Florida to Jamaica in the middle of June. The flight was very short, Only about 45 minutes. As we got closer to Jamaica, The plane started to descend over the water. The first thing that stood out was the turquoise colored water that you could see clean through. When we landed and boarded the plane, I heard steel drums being played before we made it out of the tunnel that connected the

We started early because it was extremely hot. We walked around the island for about three hours. The sights were beautiful. We went to the beach at about noon. The thing I found interesting was the beach was very unoccupied and quiet. I was able to walk at least 30 feet out without the water getting deep. The water was clear. I could see corral fish and rocks on the ocean floor. It was the coolest beach experience ever! After the beach we caught a cab to ride to Kingston. On the ride we saw mansions up in the hills and severe poverty below. I remember seeings houses without walls. You could literally see into the houses. I saw families with fruit stands and little children selling goods on the street. Seeing these thing bothered me because we were in their country for leisure and fun, but this is how their people live everyday. What bothered me is that millions of dollars are brought into Jamaica by the tourism industry yearly, But the money is not being put into the people. Imagine you are homeless and live off the land and daily you see people with money there to shop and sight see right where you are. It would be hurtful and make me mad, but despite that the local people are extremely nice and friendly. Seeing this really made me grateful and thankful of my life in the United

I believe that over my four years of high school and throughout my schooling career I have demonstrated great character and morals. It’s not what someone is underneath, but what someone does that defines them and in my opinion the best way to to demonstrate character and morals is with service. I have displayed my service in so many ways and one example is my mission trip to Haiti. I traveled there planning to help children and make an impact their lives. After a week of serving and building relationships, I realized that it had changed me more than I changed it.…

Andrew Just last year, Dylan and I traveled to Haiti on a missions trip. As you may know, it's one of the poorest countries in the world. When we were beginning our descent on the airplane, I thought about how little roads and how poor the housing was. We drove through chaotic roads and rubble filled alleys, until we reached the orphanage. New Life Children’s Home is a safe haven for kids who lived in the mountains a couple miles north.…

Growing up in Jamaica was not what some may think as ideal, it has been described as a Third World Country, but to me, it was just home. Third world indeed, poor, violent at times; a contradiction, with its sandy beaches, clear blue skies, delectable food, feel good music, and some of the hardest working people one can ever have the pleasure of meeting, who refused to stay where life may have placed them, but strived to climb above those circumstances and attempt to carve out a life for themselves and their children. Let me introduce you to the Jamaica that I grew up in and remembered; I remember the endless summer holidays growing up off the Sligoville Road, in a small district called Mt. Moreland, where the playground…
