In the summer of 2016 I went to Jamaica with my youth group. In Jamaica we stayed at a school for the deaf with a group from Pennsylvania. We did a variety of different projects throughout the week. Most of our time was consumed with mixing, passing, and pouring concrete for areas around the school. A lot of people in my group would say that although this was the most labor-intensive work, it was also the most enjoyable. Passing buckets of concrete in a huge assembly line up a ladder led to new and unforgettable friendships. My group walked down and up the narrow and uneven road on the hill in the most humid weather imaginable every day to get to the church. Let me tell you, it was worth it. It was easy to see that the kids weren’t completely comfortable with us at first. There was definitely a lack of participation the first day and half, but as the week went on, each of us had kids that would run up to us and ask if we were coming back the next day. The most memorable moment for me during VBS was on the third day. We had sung some songs, told a story, and were about to do a craft. My leader, Juliana, and I started taking out the crayons for the craft. To me a box of crayons isn’t something to get too excited about. I brought 4 boxes of crayons without even thinking twice about it. I had kids tugging at my shirt begging me to let them keep the crayons.
