My Michigan Heroes They taught me that a positive attitude makes anything easier and that the harder you work the harder it is for others to bring you down. They are my Mom and Dad and they have impacted my life BIG TIME. My Mom and Dad are my Michigan Heroes because of what I have learned for them in my 13 years of being alive. My Mom taught me that hard work makes harder for others to bring you down.…
Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…
Wyoming, Illinois is a representation of a small farming community. It sits among acres of old, history filled corn, wheat and bean fields about thirty minutes from the “big” city. My first childhood home sat on a corner. The old home used to belong to my great grandparents, but was currently occupied by my mom, sister and two cats. I looked over to my mom, “Can I go to the grocery store?”…
The anticipation of the big wooden gates opening was tense. This was the last day in Iowa and I was getting to spend it with my friend Abigail Snyder we’ve friends since kindergarten. A girl in a bright green swimsuit and a name tag opened the wooden gate gave us our wristbands and let us in. As soon as we stepped in we smelled the very pungent chlorine.…
I loved the trip to Atlanta, Georgia I took with my mom’s side of the family. First I went to the Atlanta mall. There, we tramped through variety stores, and we watched Vacation in a wicked movie theater. Then, we rode a shuttle to my cousin’s beautiful wedding and elegant reception. The reception was full of caterers, amazing food, a drink bar, desserts, and a lot of other amazing stuff.…
My love for Western Michigan stemmed from the environment I grew up in. I’ve lived in Kalamazoo since birth. My father worked and still works for Kalleward Group. I vividly remember going with my dad on Saturday mornings to look at the Seelye Center when it was still being constructed. Even as a young boy, I always thought about being a Bronco when I grew up.…
In January of last year I went on a trip to Colorado on a "college visit" with a friend and my father to University of Colorado Boulder. We left Wednesday night, skipping school both Thursday and Friday. We did go to the college and took a tour of the campus on Thursday which I greatly enjoyed, it is beautiful out there and at elevation there is very little humidity. The true intention of the trip, as important as the college visit was, was to go to Breckenridge Resort and spend the weekend snowboarding. A couple of my dad's friends were also going and we were going to share their timeshare.…
When I first came to Nothern Iowa in August, I was very shy and quiet. I knew some of my high school friends were coming to UNI, but not many. I knew that I had to make new friends and build realtionships with people as well. I was very nervous to come to college knowing I would be alone and wouldn't have my parents be around all the time. The first couple of weeks were rough becuase I hadn't made new friends yet and was worried I wouldnt make any.…
My friends and I (Ava, Jaz, Hunter, Nathan and me Kat) have decided to escape our home as we know it, in Jackson Mississippi. With all the attacks from terrorist this Country has become nothing. Most of the United States just has small towns left. We have decided to make our way on one of the only transportation ways left a magnetic train. We will be safe on the train in the forest, it is pretty much the only secure safe traveling now a day.…
Rhode Island Trip I started out in the delta airport of Michigan with amazing looking seats and I sit third class, but I don’t complain about I was about to travel over a thousand miles to get to Rhode Island where my dad was. “I’m super excited to see him”. I said to my mom”.…
The corner of Broad and Sansom will always have a special place in my heart. In my travels around the city of Philadelphia, it is one of the few places that can smack me in the face with déjà vu. Whenever I walk by and look up at the windows above I still see the “David Wright shot a 72 on Wednesday” sign (this became a battle cry for me whenever the Phillies played the Mets, regardless of whether or not Wright was in the lineup). That was the prime location I was able to snag on October 31, 2008, bright and early at 8:34 a.m. There was an electricity in the air; the championship drought was finally broken and the streets were flooded with red.…
Its Saturday morning and we’re leaving for Virginia. I am not looking forward to going and staying in an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar people. And I’m also not too excited about being all “churchy” and religious for an entire week. We are riding vans painted with the words “Honk for Jesus” “Jesus loves you” and “ASP bound Kzoo Michigan”. I am about as religious as a dead rock.…
West Virginia So the thing is I am just a twiggy white girl perhaps too oblivious to handle the poverty stricken sectors of West Virginia. And while this may be true, I also know that I have a God big enough to expand across any social, or economic boundary that we may face. I also believe that I am-- or will be-- prepared to undergo such an experience. My goal is to grow to learn more about the culture of the city, to pull myself into the best place with Christ I can be, and to trust in my knowledge and experience I do have.…
I’ve lived my entire life in Indiana, as have my parents. My mom and dad were raised close to Monroe and went to Adams Central, where they met and fell in love. They ended up moving north to Fort Wayne where they had my sister and I. We began our schooling in FWCS, but we moved farther north to the tiny town of Huntertown later, which led to my sister and I switching to NACS for my high schooling and her middle and high schooling. Due to all of the events that have happened here in Indiana throughout my life, and due to most of my immediate family living in the area, I have a desire to continue living and working here.…
“I have to get out of here.” I thought as soon as I opened my eyes. I was woken up from a hit in the face by a half-awake Brooke, telling me that my sister was calling me. We 've been in Alabama for four days and we leave tomorrow morning. I cannot wait to be home.…
