Personal Narrative: My Trip To Gator Base

The flight to Panama was long and bumping as I flew aboard a C-141, this aircraft is no longer in service. As I departed the aircraft, I was met by oppressive heat and humidity. As I looked around my new surroundings, I could not help but think that it looked as if someone had laid a giant green carpet over the landscape. It was definitely the most beautiful country that I had seen and, in my opinion it still is. The tarmac was busy with all kinds of activity going on. I asked where I should wait. I was directed to wait near a group of containers, I suspect it was to just get me out of the way. I had no idea where I was supposed to be or who I was supposed to meet. I did not have to wait long before a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) arrived to pick me up. He asked if I was going to Gator Base. I told him that I was new and did not know where Gator Base was, now that I think back, he probably …show more content…
On 16 December 1989, we had heard that Panamian Defense Forces (PDF) had shot and killed a Navy Officer in the city. We knew little about the details, we wondered what would happen as a result of this act. On 17 December we attended a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, at the conclusion we wandered off to go relax. The Command Sergeant Major and other Senior Leaders came through “the Bubbles” and told us to grab our gear and move to the vehicles. We loaded on the vehicle, not really knowing if this was just a drill or not, but they were going further with this drill than they ever had in the past. Our Platoon Sergeant came out and told us that this was the real deal and that we were pulling out and moving to FT Clayton to stage. Things suddenly got

In the book Black Hearts: One Platoon’s Descent into Madness in Iraq’s Triangle of Death, author Jim Frederick explores the events during the deployment of the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division and more specifically the actions of 1st Platoon, Bravo Company. Bravo Company, along with the rest of 1st Battalion faced grueling circumstances of inadequate supplies and personnel, poor living quarters, and a near constant barrage of enemy attacks during their 2005-2006 deployment to the poignantly named, “Triangle of Death” of southern Baghdad, Iraq. In the midst of that chaos, four men committed one of the most well publicized and heinous war crimes committed by U.S. forces in modern warfare. Four men from 1st Platoon,…

My time at Valley Forge was over, I had been fighting for general George Washington since the summer of 1775 and the victory on April 13 looked so far away because it was only late December, and it was seeming as if a turning point was unlikely. Do I stay and be loyal to my brothers or do I leave and never look back. I had to make my choice very soon, I could have left and the pain of seeing my brothers die , or I could stay and fight for my freedom such as many men had already done. The decision I made was to stay and fight for my country because many men had gotten sick, and I was a faithful servant to my country and I wanted to do what I came to the new world to do which was achieved my freedom .…

I am from a town close to Statesboro, and Georgia Southern is the school my dad went to. I grew up hearing stories about the fun times that he had here, and anytime we came to Statesboro he would take me around campus and show me his old dorm, apartment, and class buildings. My favorite story to listen to him tell is about the watermelon that would be cut and given out to all of the students. I fell in love with the school in his stories, and when I was given the chance to choose, I picked Georgia Southern. I duel enrolled at Georgia Southern for two years before I was enrolled as an official college student.…

My first year at Cedar Shoals was unforgettable, I had no idea what to expect. Most people consider going into highschool as one of the big parts of your life. I was hesitant for the change since I was going into a much bigger school and meeting new people. On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

From smelling the salty waters by the Florida Keys, seeing all of the green from the stems of green beans growing, the flavor of the freshest eggs you could get from the coop in the backyard, to the avocado tree growing in the backyard, my trip to Florida had become one of the greatest life experiences I’ve had yet. Visiting Florida taught me many skills on being independent, mentally, and how easy and fun it is just to be to yourself sometimes. It all started Christmas eve when I got home to find my presents from “Santa” there before we even went to bed. My parents had planned on taking a vacation to Florida for Christmas break to see my grandparents, but we were unable to also get my parents there.…
