On April 28, 2016, Emily’s parents took Emily, Amber, Abby, and I to Clearwater, Florida. This trip was arranged for Emily’s fifteenth birthday. Since we were traveling to Florida, we had to fly. Our plane was located at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, which it took a while for us to get there, and go through security. I was very nervous seeing as this was my first time on an airplane. As the plane took off, it was tremendously shaky, which frightened me even to a greater extent, but when we appeared in the air, I was able to calm down. When we landed in Florida, the weather felt amazing. While it was storming in North Carolina, it was sunny with clear skies in Florida. We had to rent a Black Expedition while we were there, since

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

The five hours drive in Pensacola was the longest five hours drive in all the traveling I’ve done. When my dad was driving to Pensacola I felt nervous doing to much thinking but my dad gave me encouragement saying just do me. My games in Pensacola were bad to me because I didn’t have any points, I think I’m the only one on my team who had zero points the whole weekend. I barely had any playing time even when I did a good job on both ends of the court. Most people say it’s not all about points but it is about points because how can you win with zero points it’s impossible.…

One of my roommates in college was gay. He confided in me about his sexual preference, knowing I’d respect his confidence. Back then, gay people were openly ridiculed and rejected and attacked. I wish I could say this was no longer true, but obviously I can’t. We’ve come a long way, but what happened in Orlando and the reaction to it provide harsh reminders of how people hate those who are different from them in some way.…

What started my love of swimming was when I was at a tender age of three my parents took me to Florida, I observed other kids taking swimming lessons and I decided to start swimming right then and there. On top of that, part of my old school’s curriculum was to have swimming once or twice a week. One of the many reasons why my parents and I moved to Florida was because of my love of swimming. Even though I started school with an exorbitant amount of homework, my parents and I swam at an olympic size pool religiously every Sunday.…

It was a bright summer morning in Big Cypress, Florida. The green palm trees were swaying and the bright blue rivers were peaceful. The long and large alligators were swimming. You could see them bobbing up and down, so all of the tourists could take quick pictures of them. There was a steady flow of people going in and out of the small, worn down nature center.…

When I was fifteen my mom had decided to uproot our lives in Michigan to move to a small town in Florida. It started when my mom fell in love with a business partner, Keith, whom she had talked on the phone with for months. She then had flown to Florida to meet with him several times for over the course of a year. When they decided that they could no longer live apart, the decision was made that my mom and I would move from everything we had ever known, to move to a small Florida town. I was in a deep sleep dreaming about my life until BOOM, my mom came in and told me to wake up. My family and I for the past three years, have traveled 16 long, tedious hours full of boredom, and people named Jeff standing behind the counter at obscure gas stations, with slimy bathrooms in the middle of nowhere, to Myrtle beach. The ride is the first part of the journey, through winding mountains, and weather as constant as bruce Jenner's gender, I mean Caitlyn, and multiple positions in the car, which I'm sure most acrobats couldn't achieve, is only the beginning. Three luxurious hotels, a few stifling neck cramps, and eight movies from your childhood later, you see the looming ferris wheel and know, you’re in Myrtle Beach. The first step you take onto the sand, feeling the grit, and the warmth travel from your toes to your fingertips,…
