Personal Narrative: My Trip To Downtown Columbus

Improved Essays
Another Sunday afternoon was right around the corner, and I once again found myself preparing for what always seemed to be the highlight of my entire week. This was otherwise known as, my visit to the Holy Family Pantry and Soup Kitchen. The journey to this remarkable setting in downtown Columbus, is a tradition that was commenced by my Great Grandmother and eventually passed down to my Grandmother, where it would then be her obligation to include her only son (my father) in this tradition. Once my Great Grandmother passed away, my father always seemed to be caught up in the large number of tasks that his work had to offer, so my Grandmother ‘Molly’ as we called her, decided she would instead incorporate me into this tradition. This weekly forty-five-minute trip to downtown Columbus was a journey that always seemed to be chock full of a type of exuberant joy that some people are only able to experience a couple of times in their entire lives, but little did we know, this weeks ‘experience’ as Molly would …show more content…
James stood up, walked around the corner, got into his car and left the food pantry. Still in complete shock of what I had just witnessed, I stood there against the wall and began to think about what this great and powerful man, who has almost no spare time in his busy schedule did for the homeless population of Columbus on this particular day. I began to question how a man with so much power and so little time could take an hour out of his day to spend time with the Homeless population of Columbus, but I soon realized that he may have witnessed some of these exact situations living in Akron, Ohio.
Although I did not get to speak to or have a conversation with ‘The King,’ I still felt a great sense of relief. I was able to witness a man of great power show a weaker and more gentle side of himself, that the media hardly ever exposes. I will never forget the day that The Lebron James came to the Holy Family Food Pantry and Soup

Give examples of how the practice of ministry has affected your experience and understanding of A) God At the core of my understanding of God is a God of love in covenantal relationship with God’s children. Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

King’s letter exists as a lengthy appeal to emotion. Here, we must consider this in its effect on multiple audiences; the intended clergymen, and now as a historic piece, generations of everyday people. The situation in which King is writing is from the Birmingham City Jail, in response to a statement calling his campaigns for equality “unwise and untimely”. He disputes these claims in such a reasonable way that portrays his accuser’s to be especially cruel and unjust. His writing is abundant with detailed experiences of injustice had on his people, and his own disappointment in having “to explain to [his] six-year-old daughter why she can’t go to the local amusement park that was advertised on television (King 3), making the letter more personal.…

We were recently given the opportunity to visit the County jail in downtown Cleveland. I have heard many great things from past students who have taken Women and Crime but many of them mentioned how nerve-racking it was. Although I was flustered even before I stepped into the building, every step we took, getting closer and closer to the actual cells made me more anxious. The closest I have ever been to a jail was watching one on T.V. so I had certain expectations of what I would see.…

The Midwest is home to states with rich cultural backgrounds and popular tourist attractions. To take a break from the busy schedule I have as a student, and to avoid writing more essays like this, I went on a vacation to Michigan with my mother and two siblings. We visited South Haven, a pleasant port city on Lake Michigan’s east coast, and Detroit, the famous largest city in Michigan. These areas interest me because there’s plenty to do; there are amazing restaurants, breath-taking scenery, and family-friendly, inexpensive entertainment. South Haven is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and homely feel.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

During the summer, I enjoy going to the downtown area and watch the city come to life. There is always something to see or do during the summer months in the Chicago land area. Just exploring the lakefront by walking or riding a bike is exciting. To see so many people riding their bikes and running is enough to motivate anyone. The biggest problem I have is finding time to fit these activities into my schedule.…

Chapter 1: Columbus, The Indians, And Human Progress: This chapter described the putative discovering of the Americas. It had two common themes; the author laid out how he would be discussing the chapters throughout the book and he discussed how Columbus “discovered” the Americas. Zinn described, in horrifying detail, the mass genocide that took place due to the greed of the individuals who “found” this great land. I put found in quotations, because it is a myth that Columbus and his crew found America.…

Thanksgiving in Baltimore with Aunt Sheila, Aunt Scarlet, Uncle Butch, and Grandma–– Uncle Mickey rarely came to these big family events, probably because Grandma hates his wife Mona’s guts. To be fair, so does everyone. Uncle Mickey is probably Mom’s favorite sibling–– and my Dad’s least favorite in-law–– he’s the most intellectual and least difficult to be around for extended periods of time.…
