An experience of particular importance to me was when I went to Cuba. This was important to me because I met a new friend Anyelo, experienced the cultural and met nice people.

One thing that made this trip particularly important was that I got to see how different people’s lives are in Cuba. There have been sanctions against Cuba since the 1950s making it so they do not have many things that we have in the US. Most of their cars are antique and have to use what they have to repair them. The cars were very bright with amazing colors. Also there are no big name brands (like Walmart or Nike) but small town shops run by people that lived in the town. They make their own bread to sell or sell there cows milk to their neighbors. I found this really

In my seventeen years of living, I have gone through my fair share of tragedies. Yes, at seventeen years old. I have seen a marriage fall apart and a family member die right before my eyes. But even after all this, I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason and life shouldn’t be taken so seriously besides all the misfortunes it could throw at us. If you were to look in my room you’ll probably see a mess clothes all over the floor, papers on my bed, and tennis balls on my desk, you could say that I’m not the most organized person in the world. But upon looking at all that mess, there is a picture hanging on just one nail, collecting dust as if it was some kind of ancient artifact. As I look at it every morning before heading off to school I am instantly reminded of a trip that I now use to define who I am: commitment, compassion, and courage. This was the photo of my trip in Leon, Nicaragua.…

Commencing Unbound A lurid, fuchsia dress with generously powdered glitter and blaring, familiar music danced to by relatives you weren't even aware were relatives are trademarks of the traditional rite of passage into adulthood in my culture and one I never had the pleasure to experience due to my family's financial situation at that time. Still, my own stride into coming of age was too one with renowned garb, although much less garish. Familiar music playing in the background and only my immediate family sat close to the stage in awe to watch me. Graduating from my esteemed high school, Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH), was the omega to the alpha of my future. That experience both humbled me and triggered the tenacity in me to…

I went to the Galapagos Islands and learned so much from my two week period of being there. I got to see amazing animals and meet very interesting people that I would have never encountered if I never would have ventured outside of my small home town Mooresville North Carolina. Seeing something in real life instead of a book or movie is a real eye opener. Many people do not get to see new cultures because of money or just have no interest in seeing new things. I feel very privileged that in my short lifetime I had the opportunity to go places and see things that most people will never get the chance to see in their lifetime.…

I credit the development of my personal values to my caring family and Cuban culture. My family was blessed with earning entrance into America through the Diversity Visa lottery in 1998. My father was a factory worker in the countryside when he began his personal rebellion against communism. He spent a year's gathering materials and hand building a house for him and my mother to move into, postponing their marriage until the project was finished, just to have it taken away by the regime. Emigrating to the U.S. was overall a difficult operation, especially as a first generation from my family to do so.…

One of the most meaningful experiences that I’ve encountered was this summer on my cruise to the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was a meaningful experience because it showed me what life is like outside a third-world country. It also made me realize that I am very fortunate of my life and how I have grown up. Making our way off the boat into this huge open warehouse to the streets of San Juan, I was frightened because of the things I've heard about San Juan. I was walking in the middle of my family not losing sight of my phone or purse.…
