Personal Narrative: My Trip To Costa Rica

Improved Essays
During my senior summer break I join my church on the mission trip to deliver textbooks to rural communities in Costa Rica. Months before our trip we had countless meetings to prepare us for what we would carry out while on our trip. One of the preparations was practicing teaching English to the kids using the reading materials we were supplying. In addition to the meetings we hosted fundraising events to pay for the materials we were delivering. One of our fundraising events was a pancake breakfast where the team members made and cleaned up after the breakfast. Another fundraiser was the missions fund raiser come for this fundraiser we took donations of items that were tagged and sold later. Both of these fundraisers helped me to lunch myself into the trip to come, Because instead of just paying for the textbooks we work to raise the money and it meant so much more to us in the end.
As the day came for us to leave we had to make a three hour bus ride to Atlanta and then a 3 and a half hour flight to San Jose. Once all the security checks and password stops were done we made our way onto the plane and on to Costa Rica. When we arrived in the airport we were greeted by smiling faces from native "Tiko's", as they call themselves, anxious to meet us.

The next days to follow we visited seven schools and churches and met many smiling faces. However, we did not know Spanish and they didn't know English but this didn't stop the love I received from each child. In addition to teaching a class we also played soccer with them and found out quickly they were soccer prodigies in the making. We also break between schools and went zip lining through the treetops and hiking up the Poaz Volcano. After we finished our excursions we visited five more schools and hundreds of

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

Two plump brown faces peered around the corner at me, their wide brown eyes taking in my pale complexion and straight brown hair. Hearing their giggles I turned and looked up at them before responding with one of the only phrases I knew of the spanish language, “hola” “¿cómo estás?” This caused a panic and they quickly disappeared, laughing to themselves and speaking in a language I had only begun to understand. A few seconds later I could feel their eyes staring down at me again, I quickly shot my head around to stare at them again, this caused them to dart away even quicker before being followed by a uproar of giggles. This experience was something I had grew quite accustomed to in my short time in Guatemala.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Seeing many people come out on a beautiful October day to donate made me smile. Throughout the day we filled many boxes and many boxes were already filled by outside donations at different locations. All the food that was donated made me feel like we were making a huge impact in our society; therefore, it made collecting food donations my favorite part of my project. Another part of my civic engagement project that I liked was getting everything ready for the main event. I really got to take the lead on this project; I decorated the front window of United Way so the children that came to the event could get a picture in front of it.…

During the long car rides to my grandmother's home in Mexico I often stare out at the landscape and think about my origins. When we arrived I wrung my hands and walked across the dirt road to her house.…

In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…

It was an early Monday morning, I was pretty happy at the time because this trip was going to get me out of a full week of school. So, it all began at the airport, looking out of the window I could see our plane, It was a bit intimidating and I was really nervous because this was going to be my first time on a plane.
