My ‘Near Miss’

During the 8th grade school year I went on a hunting trip in Colorado. I went with my dad and a bunch of his friends from around the area and some were even from Utah. I got to miss out of 8 days of school for it, and it was my first time ever going out west. I was super excited to go on the trip and could not wait for the day we started our 24 hour drive to western Colorado. It was a long but we finally got there. I met all my dad’s friends from Utah and saw all their horses they had brought. There was a ton of work to be done so we arrived 2 days before deer season opened just so we could get it all done. We started by unloading the jam packed ‘U Haul’ trailer. We then set up all the big wall tents and the outdoor toilet. After all the main work was finished, we then made sure all our gear was ready to go for the upcoming rifle season. Then, it was finally time for dinner, and then we went to bed in our cots next the the warm fireplace in the tent. The next day we spent completely cutting wood that we would need for the entire week long trip. It was hard work but it was very fun because we got to see all the mountains and trees that we were going to be hunting on the next day. I thought for sure it was going to scare the deer away and I was never going to get a shot at it. I could hear the gravel and mud churning underneath the tires of the trucks as I waited there holding my breathe. The truck kept driving and the driver noticed that I planned on shooting this deer so he gave the the ‘thumbs up’ as he drove by. Right when the truck passed, the mule deer jumped the

So I went outside to help my grandparents shovel the sidewalk and porch, right in front of us is small pasture for our neighbors, Harmstons, horses to roam. My grandfather started to laugh and told me to look over there and we see a buck and a doe mating inside the pasture while the horses minded their own business. I laughed but I thought it was awkward that the horses didn’t do anything like they usually do. Later that night I was up doing one of your last labs and I heard the coyotes outside.…

Over summer I went with some friends to the Johnson Shut-ins in Missouri. It was the first time I went camping in years and it was one of the coolest trips I’ve ever been on. It started with the drive which was about two and a half hours through isolated roads which eventually got kind of creepy because we were in the middle of nowhere, every house had confederate flags posted, and we were running out of gas. We finally found the place and found our campground and we wanted to find out what the shut-ins were exactly. It was on the other side of the campground…
