Although it may not be the orthodox turning point people so often read about in young adult novels or hear in motivational speeches, my trip to Colombia matured me in such a way that I have become incredibly aware of myself and of the stigmatized minorities in America. Along with being a very liberal minded millennial, I am also one hundred percent Colombiana and am finally proud to say so. Until my two month visit to Bucaramanga ,Colombia I was embarrassingly ashamed of my ethnicity to the point where I felt the need to tell anyone I met that I was half-white so I would be “safe” from stereotypical jokes. Years of ridicule took its’ toll on my 12 year old self and made me resent my culture, ethnicity, and overall self. I hated bubbling Hispanic …show more content…
Whether we were climbing mountains in sunburnt skin or hailing a taxi after a long day, it was impossible to not notice the pride and love these families had for their country. What really stood out to me throughout the vacation was the fact that all of the families I visited were extremely grateful for their living conditions and were always laughing and finding a new adventure to take me and my brother on; it seemed to me that no matter their wealth, their general appreciation of life was always evident. Back when I lived in New York my family tried their best to almost give me a part of Colombian culture with their late night parties, traditional cooking, and matriarch ideals, but I never really attributed these things as specific to my culture, I just ruled them out to be regular family traditions. Therefore, I ignored these traditions and turned them into things of hatred because they made me different from the other families at school. However, when I returned to America I was filled to the brim with gratitude and pride for all the aspects of my culture that made me

The Colombian flag identifies my heritage. While people eat their eggs and pancakes on sunday mornings, I’ll gladly take my Arrepa con Queso and proudly say I’m a Colombian American. My parents came to the United States in the year of 1978 and had me 10 years later. My parents always grew up on farms and strict family households, where they worked and learned to be independent at 6 years old. They brought their traditions from Colombia to Philadelphia and raised me with their tradition.…

If you were to look in my room you’ll probably see a mess clothes all over the floor, papers on my bed, and tennis balls on my desk, you could say that I’m not the most organized person in the world. But upon looking at all that mess, there is a picture hanging on just one nail, collecting dust as if it was some kind of ancient artifact. As I look at it every morning before heading off to school I am instantly reminded of a trip that I now use to define who I am: commitment, compassion, and courage. This was the photo of my trip in Leon, Nicaragua.…

Commencing Unbound A lurid, fuchsia dress with generously powdered glitter and blaring, familiar music danced to by relatives you weren't even aware were relatives are trademarks of the traditional rite of passage into adulthood in my culture and one I never had the pleasure to experience due to my family's financial situation at that time. Still, my own stride into coming of age was too one with renowned garb, although much less garish. Familiar music playing in the background and only my immediate family sat close to the stage in awe to watch me. Graduating from my esteemed high school, Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH), was the omega to the alpha of my future. That experience both humbled me and triggered the tenacity in me to…

Having the privilege of being born and raised in the Dominican Republic would instantly be a life changing experience. Having the opportunity to be born and raised in such a humbling country meant that I would be lucky enough to experience Hispanic culture at first hand, but it also meant that I would have the advantage of calling myself a Hispanic. The wisdom and experiences gained from being born and cultivated in the Dominican Republic are experiences that have molded me to be grateful for being Hispanic. Being Hispanic to me is a ravishing, blissful and heaven sent experience. However, being Hispanic and living in the United States of America is an experience that sometimes diminishes those significant emotions.…

I woke up on the cushioned beach chair, gazing across the seemingly endless magical, blue aura of the ocean. As far as I could see, glistening sand stretched across the water, as the magnificent, jagged rock structures that watched over the Pacific Ocean like birds over their prey. Just two hours outside of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, golf courses, resorts and beaches lined the entire peninsula. The luxurious resorts boasted private beaches and exclusive accommodations along the picturesque coastline of Peninsula Papagayo. Any accommodations you could possibly imagine would be provided immediately by the professionally trained wait staff.…

In the summer of 2011 when I was the age of thirteen, I was going to reach the biggest milestone in my life at that time; which was going to Nicaragua all by myself. I could remember the day when my dad booked the flight and thinking how my siblings and I were going to experience where my parents grew up and how things worked in their hometown. It was not until a few days later when my dad walked into my room; seriously but not furiously and said, “Son at your age you should feel so lucky that you guys have a better life than your mother and I had. The ticket that I bought, was for you and only for you; you are the only one going on this trip so then you know what your mother and I went through to be here to give you guys the life that we wanted as a kid.” At that time, I did not…

By the time I was a senior in high school, I had already traveled to Guatemala once for a service trip. Now, towards the end of February break of my senior year, I was in the middle of the rural countryside in Guatemala, traveling a familiar rocky road in a grey van. I was with fellow students who went on the trip the year before, and we were on our way to visit the community we had become acquainted with exactly a year earlier. Going down a winding, bumpy road in a strange country with a less than careful driver was nerve-wracking to say the least. Every rock and pothole made itself known by jolting the van and everyone in it whenever we drove over one.…

The ability to think critically is one that one must not only have but also use. To form any type of arguement or to gain any type of knowledge critical thinking must be used. The toughest challenge I’ve ever faced was my trip to Colombia this recent winter, it’s known for its violence, crime, beauty, and poverty. To get a taste of the beauty you must find a way to balance all three without being overly invested in one. This is where the issue of thinking critically came to play, as it tested not only my intelligence but my character.…
