The hardest thing I’ve ever went through? Let me take you back to almost three years ago to a very cold Thursday morning in January. I was sitting in history class when suddenly something very strange happened; the announcement speakers came on. To most people it would seem like it was a very typical day to day event to listen to announcements; but at my school announcements were rarely ever said. My classroom got completely silent; to the point where you could have heard a pin drop.…

My years in high school were quite thrilling and adventurous. Starting as a freshman, I had no idea where I was going and what was going to be expected of me. Over the years I became involved with extracurricular activities which led to my primary interest I had developed in technology and the sciences. As a freshman I joined the Students with Future Interests in Technology Club, Spanish Club, and Robotics Club. These clubs stayed with me till I graduated high school and I have loved them ever since I got involved in them.…

Our field trip to Chicago offered me a new way of seeing the city. I have been to Chicago multiple times, yet this trip offered me an experience I was not expecting. It offered me an insight to the darkness that covers the city and the beacons of light that try to shine through that darkness. It opened my eyes to those who are searching for a truth, a love and an acceptance and are finding it in so many different places; whether it is Jesus People USA, South East Friendship Center, Olive Branch, a Krishna Temple or an Islamic Mosque. In each of these places individuals are just trying to figure out where they belong and if they can find acceptance, but what each offers is entirely different.…

Even though everyone who goes to Shakopee High School knows about this situation, they do not know how much it has significantly affected my life. My life changed last year in so many ways. In some ways this has given me more opportunities, but in most cases this event has negatively changed everything around me. Worst of all it has made me lose many friends, given me a bad reputation, and has made everyone think that I am someone that I am not. People I had never met did not like me, discriminated against me in some situations; but on the other hand, it has showed me who my real friends are because they continued to persevere by my side and stuck with me through all of the tough times.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

The day my older sister was reprimanded for getting a B on a spelling test and I was hugged for the C that I had received was the day I changed. The fact that they thought more of her than they did of me was infuriating. That night I stayed up till 1 in the morning struggling through the book I had been working on aimlessly for the last couple of weeks. The next morning, bleary eyed and smiling, I read the entire book to my teacher with only minor mistakes here and there. That day I earned two stickers from an astonished teacher and when the other kids eyed them enviously, I felt true pride for the first time in my…

When I arrived at Brooklyn Technical High School, I experienced a major culture shock. In middle school, I was surrounded by kids who looked and spoke like me, who came from countries like the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Honduras. I could speak my strange mixture of both English and Spanish without worrying that someone wouldn’t understand me. At Brooklyn Tech, however, I study alongside students from all over the world.
