Personal Narrative: My Trip To A Local Non For Profit Atlas

Improved Essays
Service is something that is near and dear to my heart, and this trip was no exception. My FYS group and I went to a local non for profit Atlas (Attaining Truth, Love, And Self-control) to do projects they needed done. This organization works with troubled people who need a mentor or a shoulder to lean on. Because they are a non for profit and are very busy, the people on pay roll didn’t have the time to do yard work or extra jobs around the building. I think this says a lot about the ministry this groups does and how much time and commitment the staff has for it. They work so much with people and giving them comfort they didn’t have time to waste on trivial things. As a group we were able to bless them by painting a racket ball court and doing outside yard work like trimming bushes and pulling weeds.
During this morning we were there I was able to work outside. I didn’t have a say in where I worked or what other people did their jobs, I was to just do what I could to help. As a person who is controlling and likes to lead a situation, this was

I was excited, as an early education major this was just up my alley. Very quickly I was able to see that it wasn’t going to go as planned. They were very cute but they wanted to use my tools, and I was not okay with that. I was doing my job and I was doing it well, and here comes two little girls that want my tools of success. Then I realized that part of service helping other serve, and bringing it into the real world. The service isn’t about what I can do it’s about “Service to be service must take form and shape in the world in which we live” (134 Fosters). Those girls may not remember trimming the bush with the college student from Arizona, but the sense of hard work and service will be instilled in them. And I think that is the biggest service to the community I could

Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

Audrey Hepburn once said “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” I have been very fortunate to discover the incredible rewards of volunteering at a young age, and through engaging in the true gift of service I have committed myself to making a difference in my community through voluntarism. I have learned countless valuable skills through volunteering that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. One of the most amazing places to volunteer is the Little Light House. The Little Light House is tuition free Christian development center that provides educational and therapeutic services to children with special needs.…

Personally I raised almost a thousand dollars and as an organization we raised several thousand more. Since then I have done many hours of community service and even joined the Youth United Way of Elgin, which is dedicated to assisting under-privileged children in the Elgin area. We talk about making trips to third world countries all the time so that we can make in “actual” difference. It is important to realize that poverty is so much closer to us than we think! This trip definitely motivated me and everyone else to make a difference more often. Simple little things are the things that have the greatest impact. We were willing and ready to make a difference for Christ, and we changed the lives of many people because of…

Thesis: Because the Kingdom of God is meant for all of His people, the church is apostolic by being sent out to create this Kingdom through reaching out to marginalized groups. Therefore, the church has the duty to focus on encountering God with these groups. Scripture calls the church to go fourth and create justice, good, and peace for all people. Simply, this is the Kingdom of God. In fact, the word of the Lord states, “For even the Son of Man did not come to serve, but to serve, and to give by the Lord,” (Mark 10:15).…

Being confident and successful is one thing, but the humbling experience of putting another’s need above one’s own is what can help a person be even more successful. We help to teach the lesson of service starting in Junior High with the confirmations students, and they have several nights in a year where they are either to serve someone, or they can have some fellowship time. Most of the time we alternate the nights. The lesson about service then moves on to Senior High where all of the students have the opportunity to join in on a mystery road trip where service is one of the main aspects of the trip. The youth get a variety of service projects ranging from Habitat for Humanity, to Boys and Girls Clubs, to homeless shelters and many more.…

Summer is an extensive amount of time to do as much as one could desire. This summer I decided to utilize my time volunteering at the preschool that I once attended. I’ve always gotten along with children harmoniously, so the volunteering job was a perfect match. Typically my job included taking care of the kids, which is not surprisingly hectic, but little did I know how much of an impact I had on these children. Many of them would come to me for advice; though sometimes trivial and at times not.…
