Personal Narrative: My Traumatic Brain Injury

Improved Essays
When I was four years old I almost died. I fractured the left side of my skull while playing with a ball. The fracture caused two subdural hematomas resulting in a traumatic brain injury. After my surgery I went into rehab and was discharged a week later. Today I still deal with the results from this accident. My traumatic brain injury caused a learning disability that I have had to learn to deal with every single day. My learning disability made me study more during school and taught me how to advocate for myself. Throughout my academic career I have had to overcome challenges like many other students, however my challenges were unique to me.
My learning disability has taught me how to seek out help for resources. I have learned a valuable

On his walk to the train station to return home, he was struck by a car and left for dead, unconscious, on the poorly-lit street. Paramedics rushed him to Cooper University Hospital where he was immediately intubated and monitored for stability. Based on the information provided, a comprehensive assessment of Sarah’s speech, cognition, and orientation would be necessary. In order to properly assess her condition, it would be beneficial to know how recent her injury was and how long she was unconscious post-injury, as this can alter the prognosis of her condition. Assumedly, the Glasgow Coma Scale was completed on Sarah when paramedics first arrived on scene, and would be inappropriate to complete after surgery, as the anesthetic could skew results; however, I would complete the Rancho Los Amigos scale, had it not be completed prior to a potential MRI. Because Sarah is currently in surgery, it would be assumed that she had also already had an MRI and these scales had already been completed.…

If you ever had a conversation with someone and they ask you who you are 90 seconds from when you introduced yourself, you might be dealing with a person who has had a traumatic brain injury. My father, aka 10 second George, suffered a brain injury four years ago after surviving a motorcycle accident. A TBI is known as is a nondegenerative, noncongenital insult to the brain from an external mechanical force, possibly leading to permanent or temporary impairment of cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functions, with an associated diminished or altered state of consciousness. It wasn’t the accident that caused my dad’s TBI (traumatic brain injury).…

There are many types of brain structures that could be affected by a concussion, and cause minor or serious damage to the brain and cranium which could lead to long-term effect or temporary effects. A couple I have found are the occipital lobes, the frontal lobes and the parietal lobes. The occipital lobes are located in the back of the head, if the concussion hit the back of the cranium then this would cause damage to the occipital lobes. Therefore, resulting in damage to your vision, because the occipital lobes process visual information.…

Likely enough, I suffered my first major injury in a taekwondo tournament; I broke my left ankle trying to kick my sparring opponent in the face. I couldn 't put any pressure on my foot or else I would risk further injuring it, this led me to becoming depressed and helpless. I had to resort to surgery if I wanted to walk again; my experiences during the recovery process foreshadowed my desire to become an occupational therapist. After the surgery, my doctor recommended me to an occupational therapist in jersey city. My occupational therapist was kind hearted and he made my recovery process such a breeze, and I actually looked forward to seeing him every week.…

My grandmother has been a very important person throughout my life. My entire childhood was spent with her, but once I started getting older, it has been hard to keep up with each other. During this time of our distant relationship, she happened to experience a ruptured brain aneurysm, and I have never gotten the opportunity to sit down with her and learn more about this. She cannot recall anything that happened after when she was experiencing symptoms up until four to five months post insult, so I also referred to my mom and her husband for this information.…

Many people have a memorable event that shapes their lives; unfortunately, I was in a coma for mine. In February 2012 -- mid-way through my freshman year -- I suffered a brain aneurysm. There were no big warning signs, no red flags... just a nagging headache two days before. I went to sleep one night, and woke up two days later in a hospital room, surrounded by a dozen strange people, with a breathing tube down my throat...and everyone telling me to RELAX.…

I absolutely do have a better understanding of how the mind works. It is amazing to me to look at what a brain looks like and know what each part does. People that live with brain trauma have a hard time responding to what we go through day to day; unless they have someone that will stand beside them daily to help them function. I cannot imagine what they go through; do some of them really know what is going on with their brain? Do they know what caused them not to be able to do the things everyone around them can?…

Two years ago I had to go through an experience that was not only scary but very hard. After hundreds of X-rays and 2 MRI’s the doctors started to notice that something was not right about my brain. After looking over all the xrays and mris they figured out that my brain was too big for my skull. This would have to be fixed with brain surgery and this specific thing is called chiari malformation surgery. Hearing that you will have to be going through such an intense surgery at age 13 was definitely a moment in my life I wont be able to forget.…
