The transition into adulthood is a gradient, like fading from white to black. It means gaining self confidence, gaining respect in the community, and less reliance on parental guidance. Events that show that one is transitioning into adulthood include getting a drivers license, getting your first car, registering to vote, graduating high school and the like. Even when one of these markers of the transition is crossed, there are always more on the horizon like marriage, having kids, etc. For me, a significant event that showed I was transitioning into adulthood was when I was approached to be the Social Media Chair on my local Relay for Life event. I have dedicated many, many hours to this event. As a team captain, I attended monthly meetings with other team captains, some of whom were high schoolers like me, and others were adults. At these meetings I got to know them personally and I made an impact. After only being a team captain, this was a major step along the transition into adulthood. In your lifetime you will arrive at an age when you begin to think you are now an adult and have now reached a strong maturity level. That age is different for everyone and is defined by many different events such as a death, a party, a ritual and other life moments. In today's society, there is no reason to hold a traditional coming of age ritual. In modern times not everyone is brought up in a family that will supply a traditional celebration like a Quinceañera or a Bat or Bar Mitzvah and yet, people will still make it to the end of their road.…

Change is seen differently by different people. Some accept it while others deny it, depending on their values and mentality. This is seen in many places in today’s world, like political models, society’s values, and debates on environment based on science. Similar to almost everyone, life presented me with a chance of change when I was fairly young, end of 4th grade to be exact. I was asked by my parents to switch schools from a local medium to international medium of studies in India.…

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…
