Personal Narrative: My Thoughts On J-Term

My Thoughts on J-Term Ever hate something that most people enjoy? J-Term was a chance for all of the students to explore something that was not something necessarily educational, but something that interested them. My J-Term was called exploring athletic careers. I think J-term was super dumb, but if it was improved it could be amazing. During my J-Term I went out and looked at some career options that I could be interested in. After I was done with all of them I decided that I didn't want to do any of them except maybe high school coach. We only saw about 4 different career paths which were coach, physical therapist/ athletic trainer, chiropractor, and the local dance instructor. They only took about an hour or two to visit with so what

After watching some gameplay videos for the new ps4 game Until Dawn, I was reminded of a strange term I had once heard, the butterfly effect. Upon seeing this, I decided to do some research to find out more about it. The Chaos theory more commonly called the butterfly effect summarized by Edward Lorenz is a branch of mathematics that deals with complex systems whose behaviour is highly sensitive to slight changes in conditions, so that small alterations can give rise to strikingly great consequences. With this, I thought a many life decisions that I had made, both large and small and thought of how they affected my life and how different my life would be if I had chosen to take another path. I am a Christian and with further thought, came to…

I researched 5 different career options that I could see myself doing in the future. I love kids so I researched an elementary teacher, a special education teacher, and a pediatric nurse. I also like to make a difference in people's lives so I researched a speech pathologist and a lawyer. All these careers require different levels of college education and all have different schools that are top in each certain career.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Losing someone you watched suffer in their last days on earth doesn’t feel anything like losing a friend that was your age who had their whole life ahead of them, and losing both in less than a 2 month span doesn’t help either. The year of 2013 wasn’t the best year for me nor any of my classmates. For me it actually started when I was in the seventh grade, my mom received the rights to take care of my ill grandfather (her father). Turns out he was suffering from early age dementia; caused from drinking at an early age which happened to be 12.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

J-Term is a three week process of hands on, career exploration, and internships during the month of January that take place at Lyndon Institute. For J-Term you pick three to four classes that interest you, while some students continue with their advanced placement classes. In some opinions this period of time is a waste but in others they enjoyed it very much. In my own thoughts, I think J-Term has a purpose to teach us that it’s not just about cramming for the A and is more to improve your knowledge in other subjects than history and geometry. These classes include after high school skills, a capella, china trip, and more.…
