Personal Narrative: My Trip To Uganda

Improved Essays
In 2015, I was headed to Uganda with 26 students. I still remember the cold air from the ventilation of the airplane and shivering not knowing if it was from excitement or being cold. Honestly i believe it was excitement because this trip would be my 3rd mission trip. It was early morning as the sun rose, my friend Riley and I took our seats.
This was our third mission trip together, we have experienced el salvador and Panama but we did not know what to expect in Uganda. As we waited for the plane to take off we cracked jokes and laughed obnoxiously that that the family to the left of us told us to lower our voices. At last the roar of the engines signaled that we are taking off. After 14 hours and 45 minutes of flying in the air our first

the Ugandan Soccer team. I was so excited for this game because I love soccer. When I think of playing a soccer game I think of a perfectly cut grass soccer field but this wasn’t the case, there soccer field was a lopsided soccer field with dirt and patchy grass spots with occasional rocks everywhere. The soccer goals were even made out of wood sticks. I was a little afraid to play on that soccer filed because I was already committed to play soccer at Dallas Baptist University and I really did not want to get injured in any way shape or form. The game started and it was very one sided because we were playing there Ugandan High school soccer team versus a bunch of students who play other sports and not soccer, I was the only true soccer player. 2nd half started and the score was still 0 – 0, The ball was played high in the air near the Ugandans goal. I jumped as high as I could and so did the keeper but we collided mid air very hard and I ended up landing very hard on my back and head on the rocky ground. I was in a lot of pain but we were awarded a Penalty kick. I took the penalty kick and scored and won the game for us making it a 1-0 game. I would later find out that I had a fractured sternum after the

I was only 14 when I went on my mission trip, but experiencing that such a young age has shaped me for who I am. I was involved in three mission trips, which all occurred in the States, but in all three-mission trips I helped people who I believe needed it most. I was proud of what I did and I think it was something that not a lot of people did at my age. One of my biggest motivators were the people I was helping. After going on my first trip, I had bonded with others and had made me realize what the real world is like outside a small town in Iowa.…

I believe that over my four years of high school and throughout my schooling career I have demonstrated great character and morals. It’s not what someone is underneath, but what someone does that defines them and in my opinion the best way to to demonstrate character and morals is with service. I have displayed my service in so many ways and one example is my mission trip to Haiti. I traveled there planning to help children and make an impact their lives. After a week of serving and building relationships, I realized that it had changed me more than I changed it.…

Bam, the ball hit my head, the girl hit my head, and then my head hit the ground and I knew it was all over from there. The day my soccer career ended will be a day that I never forget. I was running backwards with my head facing the ball while the goalie went to put the ball out, also, there was a girl running right next to me. Subsequently, the girl running next to me, went up for the ball just like I did and the ball hit my head but she pushed right into my side and I came crashing down. While I was falling, the girl was falling too and her elbow came crashing into my head.…

Ever since I was 8 years old, I dreamed of making it onto a girl’s college soccer team. Every year, I would work my hardest to improve my skills to try out for my high school's girls’ soccer team. Coming from a household with only a mother to support me, I knew that I had to work my hardest to not only be the best, but to get the scholarship that would support me for the rest of the way. Little did I know that one simple snap could change everything. On a balmy Saturday afternoon in May of 2014, I was preparing to do the usual soccer game with my co-ed recreation team.…

Day and night, I devoted my free time to get better at soccer. Thus, improving my kicks, accuracy, speed, stamina, and strength. I was never capable to kick a ball further than 20 feet so I created strategies to help me build strength on my legs. For example, in my back yard I would stand a few feet away from the brick, aim to a certain brick I’d like to kick the ball to, if I hit the brick I then would step a few steps back and repeat. I practiced for about 6 months straight after the season was over; I was determined to make it to varsity my junior year.…

I have experienced much grace through the trouble and poverty I have witnessed through my mission trips to Guatemala. I went to Guatemala June 9-16, 2014, and August 4-11, 2015 (and I plan on going back August 2016). Seeing the conditions these people live in daily, has helped me take to heart the kind of help they are in need of. Many of these people have no home, no family or no money to provide for their family, yet they are still thankful. Most of the time little boys and girls won’t have any shoes on their feet or their clothes will be far too small.…
