Personal Narrative: My Thermostat

Great Essays
May I share a brief story with you? At first blush, the incident I am about to convey may not seem very important, but hang in there and you’ll see what I mean. Well, once upon a Saturday afternoon, I was called upon to change the thermostat in my son’s newly acquired home. To be sure, my home maintenance skills are modest at best, but I thought I could easily handle the job. The existing thermostat, which had rendered many years of reliable service with the able assistance of a nearby wall heater, was dilapidated and inaccurate. With my wife and mother looking over my shoulder, I confidently detached the old thermostat before releasing the two wires that protruded from a hole in the wall. I briefly inspected the new thermostat before getting …show more content…

As I removed the wire from the brown screw, I accidentally tapped the wire against the yellow screw; that’s right, the very same screw that was clearly designated as the appropriate terminal for an air conditioning unit. I’m sure you’ve already guessed the outcome of my story. For some inexplicable reason, the moment that black wire touched the yellow screw, the heater roared to life! I touched that black wire to the yellow screw again, and sure enough the heater flamed into action. That thermostat has been serving my son faithfully for over a decade. I have no explanation for the idiosyncrasies of that temperamental thermostat. I’m quite certain a qualified heating and air conditioning professional could easily solve the mystery of the yellow screw. All I know for certain is that the problem was

Our Story Our story begins in 1986. Jim Mundt, a McCall smokejumper, spent countless hours that season on hands and knees crawling through the ashes on mostly cold lightning fires to ensure that they were completely extinguished: a technique known as cold trailing. Discouraged by the tedious task, Jim had the idea of a heat sensor at the tip of a 4 foot pole that would make the discomfort of bare handed cold trailing a thing of the past. The following season, Jim left the jumpers and began pursuing a doctorate in human factors engineering.…

Looking up meekly at the sun shining through a grimy window, Ava realized she was in a cellar, somewhere, but she did not know where. What she did know is that she woke a day earlier, handcuffed to the rusty iron radiator that was anchored to the basement wall, but for how long she could not tell. For the entire next day, her screams for help went unheeded, as she sat on the cold basement floor, not only famished and dehydrated, but also mostly exposed and petrified. Adjusting the petite negligée she wore, she attempted to shield her expose skin from touching the frigid cement floor in an attempt to remain warm. All the while her left hand remained intractably cuffed to the radiator a little over a half meter off the ground.…

While most kids were outside playing in the mud and dirt, I was sitting inside on a couch, comfortable, clean, and happy to do so. As a child, I detested the idea of getting my clothes dirty. I loved to be able to maintain the pristine cleanliness of my outfit, so I often refused to play outside. Instead, I resorted to a crimson red Gameboy SP with a blazing LED screen, almost too big for my hands, for my childhood action. I’d live out intense fantasies in that three inch square.…
