Personal Narrative: My Tennis Practices

Improved Essays
At my tennis practices, I noticed one of my teammates rarely looked me in the eye. Instead of sitting near a empty seat next to me, she would sit away from me. Even when I tried to start a conversation with her,she would mumble, “Oh, hey,” and walk away. This wasn’t new to me, I’m a shy girl who is 5 feet 8 inches tall. Anywhere I went , I’d get stared at because of my height and weight.Sometimes I have to adjust my car seat because my legs won't stretch. I understand that the world is made for smaller-sized people, and I like thinking that I’m above average. One thing, for sure, is that People who don’t know me assume I’m mean.

Like my quite tennis teammate. I know why she was intimidated by me, also since she was one of the smaller players,

I began playing locally but soon enough moved onto a higher level of play. By the age of thirteen I was playing for one of the biggest organizations in the country and playing with girls almost two years older than me, which also meant playing with girls much much bigger than me. One thing that I have heard all of my life from everybody is that I’m “too short” or I’m “too small”. I always knew that I was smaller than everybody else but it never bothered me, I just thought…

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

One of the most common mistakes people make is that they define talent and skill synonymously. However, they are two completely different things. Talent you have naturally, you don’t have to work at it. Skill is ability developed from hours and hours of practice at your craft. My best talent is by far my ability to succeed in school, and my natural affinity for STEM topics.…

James I’m serious. When I’m at parties or events, I rarely crack jokes. I know when I was a child we used to have these baseball cards that would come with gum and the cards would have all the baseball player’s stats, which people would keep and make collectables. I’m not too familiar with the culture of England being that I stay in United States, but I researched and found that Rugby was a very popular sport there and one of the most popular treats there are cookie biscuits, so I was thinking if you can bring them together, it would target a market with adults and children.…

That is, until I got my first B in school. What this means portrays if you haven't seen failure before it will come and it's going to make you feel some type of way maybe sad maybe mad. When you fail you should be lead to strive for a better means in whatever you are doing. I have been on the varsity golf team since 8th grade and we have had success and failure as a team and individually. Last year I played in a match at lake whales and coach rode up in the cart and said that my score was going to count so I was thinking way too much which portrayed a not so good feeling when you play golf because 95 percent of the game of golf all in your head.…

Golf has provided me with many life lessons, and most importantly integrity. As many know, golf is an “honor game,” a game with no referees to make calls, but rather one girl’s word against another. With that being the case, honesty is a standard each player must uphold, however, at State Competition last year, that was not the case. I was playing a hole with a girl and we were stating our scores, and what I had for a girl did not add up to what she was saying she had. At this level, it is quite easy to forget a stroke here or there as we are not professionals who have scores of par or birdie but rather double and triple bogeys.…

I didn’t make it. Disappointment surged through my body, but determination quickly squashed that feeling. Looking at the roster in the courts, I couldn’t find my name. I don’t know why I had such high hopes that I'd make the team, seeing how I was new to both high school and the sport. However, I knew I shouldn’t give up, and that I will eventually make the team.…

To this day some of my favorite memories growing up was watching the Masters golf tournament with my dad or just hitting plastic golf balls in the backyard. Golf was the game I loved ever since I was a little boy. That's the reason why getting cut from the golf team freshman year hurt so bad. I was numb with an empty depressed feeling inside me. Getting cut from the golf team taught me that in my darkest moments giving up would be easy, however with perseverance and dedication any goal can be accomplished.…

The most important memory of Disc Golf for myself is the first time I had experienced a round with my brother Dylan. Growing up as a child I had always admired Dylan and looked up to him as a role model. Any idea or activity that had popped into his would usually be pushed upon me for trial. He always seemed to introduce me to ravishing new music and movies but this time was different. The game was Disc Golf and when it was mentioned, my body language portrayed the excited emotions I was feeling inside.…

Working for the Binghamton Tennis Charities, I gained experiences working within the sports industry. The first part of my internship consisted of going out in the Binghamton area and trying to sell sponsorship packages to local businesses. This was much more difficult than I originally thought it was going to be. Since I am not from the Binghamton area, it made it even more challenging because I did not know the area and anyone who owned a business. I received a lot of no’s from people.…
