My freshman year, the Mount Si High School Swim Team had its first official season. I was one of 15 girls on the team. Hardly anyone knew we existed in the community and at the high school. The fall of my junior and senior year, managing the swim team became my project. I was promoted to team captain.…
However, I believe that my greatest skill comes in Water Polo. I joined Water Polo in seventh grade, because I was too small to be effective in football, and the Fresno heat combined with heavy padding is truly miserable. I naively believed that in Water Polo I would quickly rise to the level of the Star of the team, because I have had a pool for as long as I remember. Unfortunately, as with all sports that I have tried, I lacked any talent, and apparently my swimming skills were not as advanced as I had anticipated. I spent the duration of seventh and eighth grade playing left bench.…
This past summer, I underwent many swim tests and was finally offered a lifeguarding position at a local town beach and waterpark. I eagerly accepted the offer and was excited to start. When I arrived on my first day, I was informed that there had not been a save in our shallow water facility for the past nine years. But, that nine year save streak ended this summer. A coworker noticed that a man had went underwater and quickly blew a whistle to inform everyone at our facility that there was an emergency.…
Chris Linde stated “My job as an athletic trainer is to prevent injuries as much as possible. I also support with strengthening and conditioning, guidance in nutrition and sleeping, and I also make sure the playing area is safe”. When he was young, he always adored being around the athletic trainer. Subsequently being pushed to his limits and fighting through the pain, there was always someone to care for his aches, and pains. She gave him opinions on what to do when he was alone to prevent fatigue, and serious injuries that would prevent him from playing to his fullest potential or limit him from achieving his goals.…
Competitive swimming has been a large part of my life for the past twelve years. Now that my time as a young swimmer is coming to a close, I realize the impact my coaches have had on my development as both a swimmer and a person. One coach in particular, Tracy Merke, has influenced my outlook and attitude towards both swimming and life in general. When I joined the YMCA team, I did not know anybody. While my teammates were inclusive, Tracy was extremely kind to me, going out of her way to introduce me to swimmers my age, and making sure I felt comfortable.…
I acquired knowledge and skills when I earned a spot on the swim team at Sarah E Goode STEM Academy. I have been waiting since my freshman year for my school to have a swim team. Then they finally got one my senior year. Even though I am not the best at sports, including swimming, I had to be on this team. I tried out and I barely made the team.…
What started my love of swimming was when I was at a tender age of three my parents took me to Florida, I observed other kids taking swimming lessons and I decided to start swimming right then and there. On top of that, part of my old school’s curriculum was to have swimming once or twice a week. One of the many reasons why my parents and I moved to Florida was because of my love of swimming. Even though I started school with an exorbitant amount of homework, my parents and I swam at an olympic size pool religiously every Sunday.…
Slowly swimming grew on me. The team gave me a sense of accomplishment, a second family, and a sport that I would carry with me for the rest of my life. Without my exposure to the Wahoos, I would not have joined the high school swim team. So although it seems to be one of my least significant activities on my application, it has had a great effect on my…
Water polo is not easy for me, but that does not stop me from loving it. I started playing water polo in 9th grade, and from the moment I threw the ball I knew I had to play the sport. One of the toughest skills for me in water polo is ironically also one of the simplest: releasing for the ball. Releasing for the ball basically just means getting open for someone else to pass to you, but whenever there is someone guarding me, I panic. One day at practice my coach’s patience was waning thin.…
About two summers ago I went water skiing. I went water skiing on the lake and people was driving so crazy that I flew up in the air. I panicked when I hit the water but it was actually fun though. My Uncle,Aunt,Mom,brother, cousins, and my grandparents was there.…
My heart pounds harder than it has ever pounded before. The initial feelings of nervousness and excitement are momentarily forgotten with the intoxicating smell of chlorine. As each ear-piercing whistle is heard, the biggest moment of my swimming career is approaching. Among all the high school swimmers who made it to the PIAA Swimming and Diving State Championships at Bucknell University, I try to relax and calm my emotions, but I have been waiting for this moment my entire life. The announcer blasts through the crowd of excited parents and high adrenergic athletes, “Next up, 400 free relay.”…
It was nice cool night and I was going to talk to my parents about me doing swimming and diving this year. I asked my mom what things she did in diving. She said “We practiced are jumps and we learned how we are suppose to have our hands ,when diving”. I was talking to my parents ,and just the top of my head ,I remember.…
I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
Why me? why was I as vulnerable as a rose in the midst of adolescent school girls? I lay there on the scorching ground fueled by the Qatar sun. Infiltrated by the eyes of my closest Friends, or so I thought they were. Inches away from my coffin I ponder what has made me so alluring to abuse, my bloody bruised frame resembling that of a cadaver.…
Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was learn how to swim. I was afraid of the water, but my father and aunt decided that swimming was an important skill that I should learn. They also thought it would be good exercise and help me to become physically stronger. What I did not realize was that learning to swim would also make me a more confident person.…
