Personal Narrative-My Summer Trip To California

“RING!” “RING!” “RING!” I reach over and slap the snooze on the alarm clock set to 4 a.m that morning. Although, instead of normally falling back to sleep, I roll over and plummet down onto the floor as a way from tempting myself to stay wrapped in my cozy sheets. It was a hot summer morning in Dodge City Kansas, my hometown. The day my Aunt Marie, my sister Marlene, and I, go on a late, spontaneous summer vacation trip to California. The sweltering season was eventually coming to an end, and we had spend our whole vacation (and our whole lives) in this unimaginably boring place, Dodge City. It was indeed time for a change of scenery, and even if it was an extemporaneous, last minute decision, we were by far ready to experience a different terrain. Opening my eyes was the first challenge that day; typically you would have to pry open my eyes with a crowbar in order to effectively wake me up, especially this early. I awoke to unsurprisingly tangled hair that resembled an unsettled birds nest, smeared eyeliner with black streaks all across my face, and an oversized …show more content…
I would have never imagined so many people in one place, it made it hard to hear the natural noises of the waves. Noticing that the murky waters were not even turquoise upset me beyond belief. They were barely even blue. I saunter towards the waters, squat down, cup my hands and place them gently on the shore for the tide to pull up. I scoop up some water and take a small sip. The water was salty, the only thing that matched up with my apparently, unrealistic vision of the ocean. The amount of devastation that filled my soul, the annoying pigeons gnawing away at my aunt's straw hat, the fact that my sister forgot to put on sunscreen and is now as bright as a tomato are all signs of L.A. telling us country folks we don’t belong here. The homesickness was truly overwhelming at this

11:00 am I wake up to a perfectly clean room with a perfect breakfast: sausage, pancakes, bacon, and cinnamon rolls all sitting right next to my bed. I eat my breakfast and get ready for the day. I go downstairs to see my friends Austen, Zach, and Elias down there holding four tickets to the Super Bowl game tonight and a jet sitting outside in the field. I had slept in a little past what we had planned on leaving by but it didn’t matter too much we still had plenty of time to do what we wanted to.…

Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…

The results of these experiences can be good or bad, or a little bit of both, but either way they shape our lives. The biggest life experience I’ve ever gone through is my move to California. Although this only happened about a year ago, it was a huge change for me because I left so much behind for an unknown future.…

Throughout my life I have experienced many events have laid down the foundation for the future I am building. One of the most influential and eye-opening was a trip I took to Yosemite National Park during my junior year of high school. The trip was offered to high school students in Northern California, provided by the McConnell Foundation- an independent foundation that awards grants to nonprofit organizations, public education, and government entities. The goal of the trip was to educate students on the importance of the national park, learn about its ecology, explore its natural wonders, and to interact with and meet other students.…

I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…

From smelling the salty waters by the Florida Keys, seeing all of the green from the stems of green beans growing, the flavor of the freshest eggs you could get from the coop in the backyard, to the avocado tree growing in the backyard, my trip to Florida had become one of the greatest life experiences I’ve had yet. Visiting Florida taught me many skills on being independent, mentally, and how easy and fun it is just to be to yourself sometimes. It all started Christmas eve when I got home to find my presents from “Santa” there before we even went to bed. My parents had planned on taking a vacation to Florida for Christmas break to see my grandparents, but we were unable to also get my parents there.…
