I just ate my 490 calorie breakfast. I need to stop eating such a big breakfast every morning. I don't eat very big for dinner (if I can get away with it) or lunch. It is not Chipotle, but it will have to do. Everyone has had this thought at the end of the month when the money to spend on takeout has run out and now we are stuck settling with eating in the dining hall that we are forced to pay a ridiculous amount of money for. On the first tour of Baylor’s many dining halls they had put out the superior delicious food, I guess that must be kept in the back now. Back then it seemed as if there was an edible choice for anyone and everyone; including vegans, and the freshman fifteen seemed inevitable. Having been here now for almost a semester the façade of the likelihood of delicious vegan meals had faded long ago.…

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

There is a saying that I heard long ago that has impacted my life in more ways than one. “Everyone has a sad story”, but the difference between myself and others is that I did not let it crush me, I let it inspire me. A few years ago when I wasn’t sure what sport to pursue, my father introduced me to CrossFit. CrossFit is a form of physical training that uses intense cardiovascular movements blended with Olympic weightlifting maneuvers for a total body work out.…

I immediately realized that my weight loss is directly related to my stress and how difficult has been for me to cook at home, although I still blamed my self for not paying enough attention to my health. One of the first steps that I used to control my emotions especially the anger was to start the diet since the night I weighted myself. I have convinced myself that it is not only about my appearance, my health can be in danger, and I will get easily sick, and fall behind of my routine…

Earlier this year in January, I decided to start my weight loss journey. I managed to get rid of thirty-seven pounds throughout a period of six months. Along with a massive change of physical appearance, this journey also generated a lot of mixed responses from my family and friends.
