Personal Narrative: My Struggle With Anxiety

My struggle with anxiety started in ninth grade. I had non-stop worries about school, my relationships with my friends and my teachers, the health and safety of my family and my future. I also had to deal with chest pains, headaches, and drowsiness. After seeking help, I took steps to alleviate my anxiety and I now believe that it can be managed. When I first experienced my first anxiety attack, I knew that something was wrong, I was sitting in church and negative thoughts about my friendships at school and church began swirling in my head in the middle of the service. I began breathing faster and was gasping for more air as I began to feel like I was sinking into the ground. I felt like someone placed a heavy bowling ball on my chest. This happened several more times and I knew that I needed to ask for help. …show more content…
She was very supportive and did her best to be understanding. She made an appointment for me to see a doctor since we didn’t know exactly what was going on with me. Both of us were worried that the symptoms might be a sign of a serious physical condition with my heart. When I saw the doctor and told her my symptoms, she explained to me that I experienced an anxiety attack. She also told me that a lot of teenagers experience anxiety and that I’m not the only one that is dealing with it. The doctor explained to me that anxiety can be managed in many different ways. She explained that drinking less caffeine, getting enough sleep, eating healthier, exercising and doing things that I truly enjoy can help me alleviate some of these negative thoughts that can trigger anxiety
