Personal Narrative: My Strengths In Reading

Decent Essays
I try to read as whenever I can because I’m really busy with school and sports. Some of my strengths in reading are reading aloud and my knowledge in vocabulary. Some of my weaknesses are staying interested in the book that I'm reading and I only like reading certain types of books. Reading groups have helped me as a reader to improve. Realistic fiction books have helped me like reading more. My favorite place to read is at my house and I like to do it independently.

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

I think my reading has improved because I use better vocabulary and I can understand what I am reading. The reading strategies have helped me to become a better reader. I still rely on DJE, T2T like I did when I took basic reading as well. They are very helpful strategies that help me to read better and think about what I am reading. For this and other classes my goals are to understand what I am reading and being able to sum up what I read with very little difficulty.…

I am most proud of my reading responses for each of the module because I have learned so much by reading those chapters. Not only it helped me improve my reading skills, it also improved my writing and thinking skills. I was able to apply what I have learned in the chapters to the reading responses. I have always struggled to put my thoughts on paper in a way that is coherent and correct according to the assignments. For example, the reading responds in chapter one for the Coca-Cola bumper sticker, I took a different approach which made the respond off topic.…

I like reading because I am often learning while doing so; not just in the conventional sense of reading out of a textbook, but while reading novels I am learning about writing itself. I am not confident in my writing, and this is part of the reason I like to read. As a reader, I can stand passively by in a sort of safe zone where I feel more free to learn. Reading others work is one thing, but writing your own is completely another. Reading is understanding writing, and understanding the meaning that the author is trying to convey.…

Reading to me is comparable to time travel. Anyone can learn from people who were living in different parts of the world, at times when they weren’t even alive. To me this presents incredible opportunities and I have recently started to take advantage of it. My earliest memory of reading may be like anyone else’s. Your mom comes in your room right before you fall asleep and reads you a bedtime story. As a child I enjoyed reading and allowed my mind to drift to a place of imagination. But when I reached the age of eleven my imagination and enjoyment of reading had drifted away. It wasn’t until my first day of 6th grade that I met a teacher who would show me what it truly means to enjoy reading and would change the way I lived my life.…

I have developed strong writing skills throughout the semester; any pieces of writing I have written have improved every time. Looking back at my essay and revising them to be placed in my portfolio, I saw where my weaknesses were and where my strengths were. Just by reading my past essays, I noticed how I have grown as a writer. While plagiarism percentage wasn’t an issue and transitional words were my specialty, using broader vocabulary, staying on one point of view, focusing on my main idea, creating complex sentences, assembling my thoughts onto paper, and using literary techniques to grasp my audience’s attention were my weaknesses. And while I have enriched my writing skills over this term, there is still more room for improvement and…
