Personal Narrative: My Strengths As A Student

Decent Essays
As a student, one of my strengths is that I’m a perfectionist. Although majority of people may view this as a flaw, in my opinion, it can actually be quite beneficial. It motivates me to work diligently, study efficiently, and to spend sufficient time on school work. In addition, being so meticulous about my work means that I pay attention in class and make sure that I understand everything to the best of my ability.
The most significant subject that I want to improve on this year, is my writing. I typically prefer assignments where the instructions are straightforward and there is only one correct answer. This year, I want to make progress on the more open ended projects, especially writing. One goal I have is to work on phrasing my writing

A weakness that I have is that I do not know how to say no to individuals that ask me for help since I love to help people. It is important that I learn to say no when helping others gets in the way of me accomplishing my tasks. It is important that I do both, but not when I run the risk of not meeting my deadlines and me staying late hours after work to get my work done. It has not been an easy task saying no, but I am learning to be okay with saying no because it is important that it does not interfere with my responsibilities.…

My parents have said to work hard and do my best in school. I never understood why until I got older. The reason they told me to do my best in school was because they wanted me to think about school and my future. Both of my parents didn't get the chance to go to college. They both came to the United States looking for what most people come to the United States for ‘The American Dream’, they wanted a place where they could raise their children and find a stable job.…

During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class GSW 1110, I learned the skills to research, write, using correct grammar and syntax, as well as setting goals to improve my skills as a writer. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers, I was able to learn those skills. Skills such as having better vocabulary by using a few new words. Another goal is having a better flow throughout the essay by not going into detail about information that does not need to go into depth. A few more goals are better planning of ways to set up an essay and having credible sources and more information about sources.…

Several challenges occurred during my college career. I worked throughout the majority of my education to pay for books and tuition. My parents helped with the costs of attending college as well as supporting me when my studies became difficult. The experience of being the first in my family to work towards a bachelors degree meant a lack of guidance and advice. I sought out the advice of an adviser who I have been working with for the past three years.…

Growing up in a large, farming family has given me a myriad of assets that have gotten me to where I am today. Determination, one of those assets, stems from the many obstacles I have faced as a first-generation, low-income, LGBTQ, woman faced with mental illness. Though all the factors were and are against me, I have become the first in my family to go to college. This determination has followed me into the classroom. I strive for good academic standing and understand my classes are not just homework to be done, but as a source of knowledge that I will need in my future career.…

My first year of high school was winding down, teachers had covered all learning material, and most students were preparing for finals. June had just begun, and along with studying, I had an upcoming saxophone recital for which I had been preparing since April. The Tuesday before my recital, I had my second to last lesson with my teacher, Fred Scerbo, before the recital on Sunday. I was preparing a piece by Charlie Parker named "Anthropology". Despite its difficulty, I felt that I would be able to perform it well.…

My educational and career goals have changed a lot throughout the years; I have wanted to do everything from directing films to having the presence necessary to address the United Nations General Assembly. It seems like a wide range of possibilities but one thing they all have in common is that they all require an audience, not for fame or riches, but to have a voice that can reach those who need to hear it. My parents have always taught me that so long as I do good, through whatever I do, to be happy. Still, while one can be content in the moment, there are many hardships and discrepancies people face daily. One can choose to accept their circumstances and make the best of them or work to have a different life, but it is difficult to be really happy knowing that some people struggle with the ability or even the opportunity to do so.…

When I first came to this school I would say that I was a weakling I could barely lift weights I got tired very fast. When I first started strength training all I did was 10 pounds on the bar which I knew was bad looking at all the other people and I wanted to get stronger like like my friends in Brown City. Halfway through first trimester I had to do bench press with my partners and I seen your head walked up to me and he said “why don't you try a plate.”…

My educational story started a long time ago in Bogota, Colombia. Being one of four children in a low socioeconomic class made it difficult for my parents to afford a college education for all of us. My older brothers were in the engineering school, which was expensive, stretching my parent's pockets and, reducing the possibility for them to pay for my college tuition. When I was finishing high school, I looked at my different possibilities to pay for my education without having to resort on my parent’s money. I found out about a grant that a prestigious university offered to high school students with the best high school grades, and the best scores in the ICFES test (similar to the ACT test in North America).…

I have always been a perfectionist; it’s a trait that’s followed me for as long as I can remember. I constantly strived for the highest grades, the nicest clothes, and the most friends. Perfection was a part of me that I understood and could handle, but when I reached high school, I lost all control. At that point, it didn’t just describe me, it defined me. When I entered ninth grade as the ambitious, young freshmen I was, I had no idea what was coming.…
