“Have faith in yourself.” The words traveled steadily and smoothly in the thin air until they reached my ears. I tapped my foot as beads of sweat rolled down my face. I was in my anxious state again. My Spanish teacher, reading my signs of unease, sat in her chair trying to keep me calm as she waited for me to recite the capitals of Venezuela. It was all or nothing. Anxiety has been my constant companion since childhood, an inner demon I fight on a daily basis. For years, I struggled to maintain self-control of my emotions and it prevented me from reaching my full potential. Until, one day, I got my first taste of victory. It was the initiation of my transformation from a weak and timid girl into an industrious and confident student.

An instant feeling of fear overwhelmed my body. How would I be able to lead the team? Would I let them all down? As I paced tirelessly across the room, I began to doubt myself and considered quitting. When I spoke to my sister about my dilemma, she looked at me with serene eyes and uttered, “You’re a Pelayo. Pelayo’s don’t quit.” Every feeling of doubt and worry left my body. I was determined, eager, and zealous. I had transformed my state of anxiety into a feeling of purpose and commitment. I had conquered my inner demons of anxiety once more. On May 5th of 2013, Morada Middle School earned the second place spot at the annual San Joaquin Academic Pentathlon competition. Arleth Pelayo, the team captain, walked to the stage, shook the presenter’s hand, and was handed the school plaque.

As an athlete, I began my journey in sports full of dedication, fire, and hopeful anticipation of what I could do on the football field and on the basketball court. Much of my life has been devoted to extracurricular activities such as sports and the comelec, which taught me hard lessons in ethics and values that have made me who I am today. I not only represented my school varsity, but also sports clubs outside of school, which led me to compete in several local and international tournaments. As well as my passion for sports, I grew into my passion for service; service for others and for my school, partaking in clubs and community service activities, each endeavor playing a role in the development of my abilities and expansion of my potential…

If someone told the middle school me that I was going to lead the basketball team as a captain for three years in a row I would’ve never believed them. But after living through it, I am more than grateful that it got to be me. After having three different coaches, winning the MVP award all three years, and having every girl on the team look up to me by my senior year, it has truly been a blessing and I cannot fathom that it has come to an end. Not that I had to carry the team, but I wanted to carry the team for me. I did this because I knew that was the only way that any of the girls would start trusting each other.…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

With every practice of my routine, with every lap I ran to boost my stamina, with every vocal exercise I did to strengthen my diaphragm, I was one step closer to my goal. Although it was hard, I finally experienced the value of hard work when my team was announced as overall first place winners at our first competition. It was also experiences like being my team’s captain for two years that contributed to my valuing of hard work. It is not easy leading an entire team, but the hard work all pays off when we hear that crowd cheer for us after perfectly executing a tedious performance. Along with reaching my goals as a cheerleader, I also began to apply the same attitude to reaching my goals academically.…

April, resembling preceding months, had been miserable. But as I stood there listening to the song "Mom & Dads", the concert grew beyond just a fun time; it became an escape from the past year. Purchasing the band's CD became my heart's only desire and money was no object; I'd listen to that one song over and over as it became the soundtrack to regaining control of my life.…

Faith, for those who don’t know is, by definition, a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of religion, based more on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. Faith is how you trust and believe in God; faith is usually what one wishes or hopes for, whether that be a miracle to save an ill-ridden child or whether it’s just wishing for a new car. If you put faith in God, he may not grant all your wishes and dreams but he will fall down from heaven to show you that you don’t require those things such as a new materialistic items. Faith helps those in need through hard times by giving them something to believe in, by giving them hope that there will be a better future, and by giving those a safe haven.
