I finally picked the wheat, it only being $0.88 while the white being $0.94. I shuffled back to the counter, aggravated at myself for not finding a stable job yet so I can buy the things I want like $0.94 bread. I placed the bread on the counter, not being able to look at the cashier knowing he had seen my little tantrum not even a minute ago. I shoved my hands in the pockets of my black hoodie. “That’ll be $0.88.” The bored lady said behind the counter, chewing her gum annoyingly loud, making me cringe. I fished in my pocket and found the dollar, all crumpled and ripped, making me sigh loudly. I shoved it over, getting a bag with bread in return. …show more content…
I put up my hood and exited the small shop. Home was the only thing on my mind. Now all that was left is the five block walk until I reach my apartment and crawl under the covers, hiding from the world. I walked past several shops, and buildings. Then I walked through a vacant park. It was kind of cold and I wish I brought a sweater. The Arrival I had originally planned to travel to Rio on September 5th through September 12th. A perspicacious and experienced hunter named Rainsford accompanied me. It was nighttime when I first spotted land of any sort. It was vaguely visible and was opaque, so misty that even Rainsford couldn’t see it. Utterly tired, I began drifting off, dreaming of the adventures we were soon to face.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…

Shortly afterwards, I grabbed a soda out of the refrigerator and with will in hand, went out on the patio and sat upon my favorite chaise lounge. The disinheritance was my mother’s way of attacking from the grave and her ultimate objective, humiliation. She explicitly knew that the inner circle of blue bloods, I grew up with would view me as a social outcast and treat me as if I had a contagious disease and shun me. How stupid of her to assume that I would lose sleep over a gaggle of pretentious social elitist, self serving ideological bores that had lost touch with reality eons…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. This sickness made it impossible for me to see a positive future, until the day I stopped calling myself “crazy” and began to grow from what we all call, depression.…

Carry On opens with a quote by Henri Nouwen, “Each step is like a candle burning in the night. It does not take the darkness away, but it guides us through the darkness. When we look back after many small steps of love, we will discover that we have made a long and beautiful journey.” For three weeks this summer, I lived in the woods of New Hampshire as a Counselor In Training at Camp Carefree.
