Personal Narrative: My Sorority Theta Phi Alpha

1. I participated in the Community Connections pre fall program during my freshman year. I also attended the Encounter with Christ retreat during my freshman year. I attend mass every Sunday and am involved with volunteer services. In addition to working with the volunteer services office, I also do a large amount of service work with my sorority Theta Phi Alpha. At home during the summer, I volunteer once a week on my local ambulance corps, and serve meals and provide daycare at a shelter for women and children in my area.

That in itself showed me that the women in the organization are people that I could see myself being around for the rest of my life. They exemplified the kind of sisterhood that I would want to be affiliated with.…

When you join a sorority, you join a cult. As I sit here writing this in the house of the sorority I belong to, I feel as if I will be doing them an injustice by unveiling them in a negative light throughout this essay. Ancient sacrificial humans were not showered in monogrammed water bottles and bundles of candy when they were initiated into a group, but the process to become a so called “sorority girl” proved to show striking parallels with that of the age-old process to attach oneself to a religious cult even before Christ. Sure, sororities engage in mind-altering practices. Yes, they request unquestioning commitment to their leader.…

I am interested in membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., because of what Delta represents. To me Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. represents strong, educated black woman that are dedicated to improving their community. When I was a child I always said that I wanted to improve my community. As I grew up I saw how children from impoverished homes were not always exposed or given the opportunity to achieve a better life. That’s when I realized that we have to help our youth in order to see a change in our community.…

With the rates of alcohol abuse among college students soaring higher than ever before, many are looking at involvement in Sororities and Fraternities as the pressing issue. The topic has garnered more than enough media attention lately, especially in regards to how being affiliated in Greek Life negatively impacts the individual both physically and mentally. Particularly, how these organizations can enable environments for issues such as substance abuse, discrimination, and the additional effects on cognitive development and self-esteem. With all of these factors in mind, the controversy over whether or not sororities and fraternities should continue to hold a place on college campuses ensues. If these organizations continue to perpetuate such bad behavior, “students [will continue to be] at risk, and all Greek members and institutions…

Living in a sorority house with forty-six girls can get messy. It is a lot to keep up with and manage, and I can’t imagine how our house mom, Irene sleeps at night. Irene has a high-stress personality, and gets very frazzled when things are out of place. The other night our snack room and dining room was very messy. Instead of Irene having to beg girls to help her clean it up, I decided to take the initiative and clean the tables, sweep the floors, and take out the trash.…

Sofa to Represent Our Sorority Throughout the multiple years that the Eta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma at Lynchburg College has been established; we have been in dire need of a new sofa. We initially received a donated sofa from our Alpha chapter at Longwood in 2007. However, as the years have gone by the sofa has aged unpleasantly: the material is slowly detaching itself, the springs are coming out of the bottom, there is no longer a cushion, and we have wooden boards preventing us from collapsing in. With our sofa being in such a terrible condition, I took it upon myself as Treasurer of Sigma and a sister living in the house, to not only search for a new sofa but also purchase one on behalf of the sorority. In addition, this not only…
