Personal Narrative: My Sophomore Year Has Affected My Life

My sophomore year was one of the most difficult years of my high school career, during that summer my grandmother was in and out of the hospital for a variety of ailments in particular the most recent a heart attack. Later that year, I had gotten really ill and for the longest time diagnosis was undetermined. The symptoms were unbearable to the point where when I laughed it resulted in tears. I was referred to several pediatric doctors and specialists, finally after a couple of weeks one of the specialists for pediatric infectious diseases announced the news to my parents and myself that my left lung had completely collapsed, filled with fluids and my body was relying on my right lung to do most of the work to fully function properly. I missed over half of the entire school year and it affected my life immensely. Even though the news was not music to my ears, I was fortunate the doctors were able to diagnose it in time before my right lung would also collapsed which would most likely been fatal in most cases if not treated. My instructors were informed of the situation which was a sigh of relief because all I could think about was how I was going to go about my academic studies since I was not going to be present for my classes. My guidance counselor remained involved with my situation, he was the vital link that kept my parents updated on important information and kept me connected to my instructors. I remember vividly his attitude remained positive as he always tended to give my family and me good news in particular winning a medal for the local science fair in which I entered prior to my illness. I was expected to present it in front of the judges however, due to the circumstances I was unable to but my partner presented our team and I assisted in any
