Personal Narrative: My Social Location

Improved Essays
My social location depends on my traits, and what specific groups I belong to within my society. Two traits are I am eighteen years old and a female this shapes my social location. I live in the city Canton, but I am away from the city because I live on a dirt road with lots of property. The houses are farther apart than in a suburb, so we have a lot of land. Living with a lot of open property influences the type of hobbies I like. For example, I love riding dirt bikes and being outside. Other hobbies I have are reading, writing, racing, cars, exercising, and photography. My career plans are to get a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and find a job as an engineer working with engines or transmissions. All of these qualities and aspirations I have are a part of …show more content…
My dad also introduced me to cars by teaching me the different type of cars and how they work like how the transmission shifts when you accelerate. Thus, my dad made me enjoy learning about cars, so that is why I want to become a mechanical engineer. Being a female makes me view the world as judgmental and sad because of the media’s interpretation of how women should look. For example, the media portrays women as sexualized objects and skinny while not all women dress, act, or look that way. The media causes women to feel bad about their image because they do not look like that. Sometimes the media makes me feel bad about my body because I am not that skinny or pretty like the model in the commercial. As a female, my view of the world is sometimes negative due to the media. Also, some women are sad because of the media’s portrayal of women. Being a female makes me view the world a different way than a man would. My gender also plays a part in career choice too because I want to go into a field where men dominate it. I want to show them women can hold down jobs in the automotive industry too to prove them wrong. My young age also influences my view on the world in a huge way. I see

It is not simply just the geographical location, but all the aspects of culture and society that make up that individual (Wright). The social location of a person is dependent on both the social structure and the social institutions present in their life (Wright). An example of social location can be viewed if an imaginary college student is created. For instance, imagine a freshman male student who is from Chicago and was born into a middle class society. He is a Christian and ranks himself as a moderate when expressing his views on American politics.…

The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…

My whole life I have struggled with answering the question “where are you from?” As a little girl I was always tongue-tied. I didn’t know my family’s history, I never had the ability to establish myself in one place because my father’s job required constant adjustments to my surroundings. However, my sophomore year I took my first college level American History course and it began opening doors I didn’t know existed. I soon realized that I may not know exactly where I come from, I may not belong to a specific state or region, but I am a part of the big picture –The United States of America.…

How have social and cultural messages shaped your view of gender? Social and cultural messages have shaped my view on gender by continually reminding how things may seem as if they are changing but the progress for is slow. What have seemed to affect me the most is the lack of respect women is giving in our society. I was raised by a single mother and her support system was all women.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

Personally, the three main contributors to my social location are race, social class, and being a female because these three experiences have shaped my ideas and beliefs towards society. Because of my social class, I have had the amazing opportunity to attend Harding University where I am seeking a higher education. Another factor is racial background. Race has had both negative and positive effects on my social location. It has taught me to not just go with the crowd and to be my own person.…

I’m a military child, and as such, it’s always an awkward thing when someone asks me: “Where are you from?” I don’t really know, I can’t pinpoint an exact place where I can say: “I’m from so-and-so.” I can tell you where my family spent a lot time though, where the memories are the deepest, and the places I felt a strong connection to. Alaska is such a place. There’s nowhere in the world like Alaska, and I can say that with extreme clarity because my father has been everywhere.…

“Where are you from?” For most people, answering this question is very simple. For me, this is the hardest question to answer, which I had to answer differently every time. Born and raised in Korea and living in the United States for several years, I always thought that I belong to both countries; however, the trip to Korea last summer guided me to answer my ridiculously hard question and learn about myself.…

Some Space to Some Place There is a place that is neither here nor there. I have always been drawn to the in-betweeness. I have spent so much of my life, whether spending time on the airplane or learning new language, exploring places I have never been. When I first travelled internationally at 7, everything was unreal–sitting on a chair for 13 hours, looking out the tiny rounded window to see endless view down below, calculating time lag. Ever since that day, I was always waiting and wanting for another one and preparing for the day – being in between time and place.…

Looking back on my life as a whole, I can see now that I did not have many influences that swayed me to seeing gender and sex as two very different categories as many do. I believe that media and religion is the strongest influence to the many people that believe women are meant for the kitchen and men are meant to never cry. Because I was not exposed to the media or religion a lot as a kid, I believe gender stereotypes have had less of an effect on me. When I got to the age that I was the most impressionable, my adolescence, I was involved in the parts of media that were aware of how society sees gender. Now, as an adult, I feel that I am aware of when the media and the news is being sexist.…
