Personal Narrative: My Small Town Life

Improved Essays
Murphy is a small town located in the smoky mountains of western North Carolina. I have lived in Murphy all my life. Because I have lived and experienced the small town life the Carolina community at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can learn my important small town values. Many revolt against small town values because the majority of people have a falsified negative view of small towns, but small towns, like Murphy, can teach individuals important lessons. Lessons such as loyalty, dedication, trust, and how to maintain a good image in the community.

First of all, word spreads quickly in small towns, whether it is between students at school or in family life at home. Due to the high amount of gossip in small towns individuals have to respect others, perform voluntary good deeds, and put forth the maximum dedication towards solving different issues to maintain one's positive charismatic image in the community. By living in a small town I have learned to create a good image for myself by acting maturely and dedicating myself to helping friends and family maintain a good image. By building a

Trusting people takes a lot of guts, but trusting others can lead to good connections and relationship. I have trusted many individuals, whether it is trusting someone to complete their portion of projects, trusting my teachers to give coherent lectures about subjects, or trusting my own planning and time management skills. Trust is very important for having a successful community.

In conclusion, I believe the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill can expect me to bring important life lessons to its students. Lessons that include loyalty, respect, trust, dedication and the importance of maintaining a good reputation throughout the community. I believe my small town life will not prohibit me but instead will prompt me to provide the Carolina community with important

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

I have lived my entire life in rural Ohio. Due to this, my experiences have not always been that of a typical member of my demographic. My house is situated with a swine building on one side and corn and soybean fields on the other, with the crop type depending on the year. The nearest town holds little options for dining or entertainment. The establishment that resembles a restaurant is just a pizza joint and in order to see a movie at a theater a thirty minute drive is required.…

Imagine a town that is small enough that people know each other very well, but also is big enough to keep meeting new people. My hometown of Cary, Illinois is a very inviting place where people are friendly to new members of the community and also keep close relationships with community members as well. I believe this small community has allowed me to really be myself and be confident that I will find people and friends who like me for who I am. My hometown of Cary Illinois has a population of about 17,965 as of this year (2017), which may seem very large or very small compared to how some people grew up. To me, however, this size town has allowed me flourish and be confident about myself.…

On a cold, blustery February day, I found myself back in my hometown, broke, broken, alone and confused. In a daring escape, like something out of an old war movie, my mother had come to Phoenix and liberated me from my husband. In Phoenix, where I had been living for three years, it was warm.…
