Personal Narrative: My Sister Simone Boucher

Decent Essays
If I could be any person for a day in their life I would choose my older sister Simone Boucher. Simone was born with Down Syndrome, a disability that results from an extra copy of the 21st chromosome, and delays a person’s cognitive, physical and social skills. People often remark that my sister is “very high functioning” and that her disability doesn’t stop her from achieving amazing things. In just a couple of hours, I could learn so much from her perseverance and determination. Simone has a harder time with daily activities that I take for granted, such as tying her shoes, making her bed or riding her bike. Experiencing those things and maybe the frustrations and extra effort she expends, would make me appreciate things that come easily.

The sun’s burning rays beat down on us as we dug through the layers of Egyptian sand and rock. We had only begun the excavation the previous day and had already uncovered one-fifth of the ancient pyramid. I, as well as a team of high-ranking archaeologists, had accompanied Sarah Parcak in an expedition to unearth a lost Egyptian pyramid. “How’s your section of the chamber coming along, Erica? We’ve just uncovered a new sarcophagus,” remarked Sarah as she passed by, carrying a large coffin.…

When asked to name someone who I think is an exemplary communicator, the person that comes to my mind is a role model of mine, Micaella. At the beginning of my junior year of high school I chose to take a class called Professional Career Internship, or Cadet Teaching. This class provided students with the opportunity to experience elementary school classrooms and the responsibilities involved in teaching by placing them in a classroom to act as an aide to their assigned supervising teacher. Micaella was my assigned supervising teacher and allowed me to take on a large role within her classroom and quickly became someone I looked up to…

My sophomore and junior year I was part of the “Big Sister” program for girls lacrosse. During this program we got to chose a “little sister” who was in the youth league for lacrosse. The girls depended on us to be at their practice twice a week and attend their game on Saturday. I had to be a leader to my “little sister” by helping and teaching her during practice. I gave her helpful advice and techniques to use during her game.…

For my faculty interview, my original professor canceled on me, so I had the privilege of interviewing Ms. Tina Nabors. I thought I knew a lot about Ms. Tina, but I found out I really did not. I learned that she was appointed to the LCF leader position because her previous boss believed that she would be a good fit for LCF program when it was first created. She has always enjoyed working with students so it came natural to her.…

I do not if you remember me but I’m Stephanie Espinal. I went to your office before the exam number 3 and talked about how can I do better in the mini-exams. I do not want to say that I give up on doing well in the mini-exams, but not matter what I do I still get a bad grade. This frustrates me a lot. Before coming to UMass I did have problems taking exams but at least, I used to pass them.…

Julia Coluzzi-Carioti, without whom I may not be here. Near the end of seventh grade, I asked my parents if I could go to a GSA field trip. My parents who do not support Lgbtq+ affiliates, decided that public school was influencing me for worse, they thought I was giving into an agenda. So they sent me to a private christian school. I lost all contact with friends from public school, except Julia, she was the only person I could talk to about all the pent anger and sadness I had.…

Who am I? Well of course I am Lauren Elizabeth Goll, but you can just call me Lauren. I am 14 years old and I was born on November 25 of the year 2002. My mom told her family that she was pregnant with me on April fools day so her family thought she was joking which now that I look back on it, it may seem pretty depressing but I swear once I first heard about this I was laughing so much.…

I came back for my sister’s funeral, I haven’t spoken to her since I left; I haven’t really spoken to anyone since I left. It’s only now that I treasure every moment I had with her, every word I said to her and every word she said back. Her son came to pick me up from the airport, the whole trip back to the house was silent; not a single word was spoken, I could only hear the gravel from the road flick up under the tyres. Funerals here were different to funerals in England, it looks like the whole town was here! As I stepped inside the familiar home I once knew, I could hear the clatter of plates and bowls and the chatter that seemed endless.…

I hate Christmas because nothing is phenomenal. I am not being facetious. I assume that Santa was busy and remiss when he forgot to give me a Christmas gift. Every time I saw other children play with their new toys by looking through the translucent window, I consternated about Christmas, and felt disconsolate. It is a paradox that a rich country should be so many poor people.…

When I first learned of this assignment my first thought was to interview my mom. She is the one person in my life I am closest to. Since we are only twenty three years apart, I thought it would be best to focus on her life up to the point where she decided to have kids. Though I knew most of what she told me it was still nice to just sit and talk about her life experiences. My mother was born to older parents and was the youngest of three children.…

As a child, having rules to follow wasn’t unheard of with my family. There was always a way to behavior with friends/family, at school, at home and out in the street. Often I found myself getting into trouble because I didn 't listen and also the fact that I always found some kind of way to slipping out of having to doing something that I knew I was supposed to do. But out of all the people in my family my mom was the strictest. When expectations set high, not meaning them meant my siblings and I typical had a week long cleaning punishments along with handing over all toys, games, and light up sneakers; about three times a week this happened to me.…
