Building rapport with my supervisee started from the beginning of the session and that really set a good tone for the remainder of the session. I started the session by asking Chris how things were going and what he wanted to discuss. By doing this, I feel that it showed I was interested in what he wanted to talk about and let him lead the session. Being able to establish that early on really helped in the simulation going smoothly. I feel that I was really in tune with the role of a supportive supervisor. During the simulation I was very encouraging of the things that I felt that Chris had done well, while also providing some suggestions of what might work next time. I asked Chris if he had thought about any services/referrals that he felt would be beneficial to the family. He was able to list some services and I was impressed with what he was suggesting, and told him so. By doing this, I felt that it would help him to feel confident in his abilities in his position at the agency. Lastly, I believe that the topics I chose to talk about went really well. We focused a lot on the cultural aspects and finding ways to make sure the grandmother understand what was going on would help the family and child. I encourage him to look into the mother and grandmothers culture, because I felt that might be a way for him to be able to connect with the family. Since Chris is not from a social work background, I would stress the importance of documentation and making sure to provide enough detail about any interaction. Also, I would have gone more into his feelings of not feeling like he is not taken seriously and give him more strategies to become comfortable in his position and working with these families. Chris and I would set up a plan for the week ahead and what he wants to get accomplished with this family in particular and any of his other cases he needs help with. Lastly, get his thoughts on the whole supervision session and what he feels is the most beneficial for him as an employee. Overall, I learned that I am very confident in my ability to be a supportive supervisor, but need to work on my administration and education skills.
