Personal Narrative: My Side Of The Mountain

MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN When I was a little kid, if we got in bed quickly, my mom would read my brothers and I a part of a book as we went to bed. Books like The Great Brain, Call of the Wild, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Enormous Egg, and, yes, My Side of the Mountain. It has been a long time since hearing the book read, so at first I wasn’t even going to read it. I had read the list and was going to read Huckleberry Finn, but by brother suggested I read My Side of the Mountain instead. Given that my favorite places to be are in the mountains, why not try reading it again? As my side of the mountain begins we are dropped into a forest in the Catskill Mountains where Sam Gribly is sheltered in his tree home during a blizzard. The book later flashes back to how it all began. Sam was frustrated with living with his family in the city and decided to run away. Everyone assumes he will be back in a few hours and so they let him go. Sam learns the art of using flint and steel and builds himself a home out of an old tree. To survive he eats plants fish and small animals. Over time he catches …show more content…
One thing that really would have helped is if she would have shown some more of Sam’s emotions. She often only briefly dwelt on what Sam was feeling. Another thing was that she included some parts that were very unexplained, for example when he took a trip into town for no reason at all. These small things distracted from the theme but didn’t interfere too much with the overall story.
After reading the book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George I must say is was a very enjoyable read. In my opinion this book was very well written. Jean made up for her few lacking points by using captivating descriptions and imagery. I would definitely suggest this book to others. I believe everyone can relate with a boy who just wanted to get away from it

She wrote this book so beautifully it opened my eyes, I constantly complain about my parents and how they are so noisy about knowing what is going on in my life. It is better to have noisy parents then irresponsible ones. She used such powerful words that made you want to continue reading. The strengths of this book are that is it an easy read, it makes you grateful and also it opens your eyes and makes you realize that not everyone’s family life is just like yours, some people are raised differently than you are. Even though I really enjoyed this book I did find a few weaknesses, one being that at times it was difficult to read and not because of the wording but because of the content.…

Life is a journey. There are changes and cycles in life that shape human personality and provide direction on how to live on a daily basis. In Charles Frazier’s book “Cold Mountain” (1997), the main characters experience this journey. The rural setting in this story plays a major role in each character’s life as their destinies are foreshadowed through their connections to nature in one way or another. The main protagonist, Inman, is a Confederate soldier who is scarred both physically and mentally by the Civil War.…

The book that I am reading for SSR is the NOBA (National Outdoor Book Award) winning One Man’s Wilderness by Sam Kieth. The story takes place near the mountainous Twin Lakes territory in Alaska--a wilderness almost completely untouched by the hand of man--and is narrated in first person from the view of Dick Proenneke--the protagonist--of whom the author used the actual journals and pictures--combined with their own first-hand experiences of the subject and setting--to craft a tribute to a man who carved his simple yet never dull dream out of the beyond. Even though I have only read a fourth of the book so far, the author--through complex yet subtle characterization--helps the reader to understand the reason behind Dick’s unwavering self-motivation…

The entire bedroom was enclosed in a blanket of darkness. I could hear my sisters, Lillian and Angela, breathing lightly as sleep came across them. I edged my way to the little bookcase next to my bed and my hand fumbled across it; I felt my horse figurines, a few hairclips, and a notebook, but I didn’t need those things now. Finally, my hand located my mini yellow flashlight I had earned at that year’s summer reading program. Grasping it tightly, I retreated to my pillow and reached underneath and pulled out…Extra Credit.…

I personally enjoyed the parts of the book where the narrator describes the times she would spend with her father and his friends at poker nights, which their wives labeled “the liars’ club”. The bond shared between them really illustrates a beacon of light during a dark time for a young child. Her father spoiled her constantly with what he had and genuinely loved her with all his heart. His friends would often say she was too spoiled, but he would constantly stand up for her. He adored her with an unconditional love that makes one’s heart happy.…

Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain is the story of Inman and Ada, two lovers who are dealing with their separation due to the American Civil War. Ada is trapped in her home at Black Cove where she goes on a mental and emotional journey to maturity. Inman goes on a physical journey which leads him back to Ada. Frazier uses references to Greek mythology to strengthen the novel and provide deep connections to the classic hero’s journey as well as other elements of mythology. Inman’s journey directly mirrors that of Odysseus, and of course the typical model for the hero’s journey.…

At a younger age, I would say I believed that I can only trust myself and my mother, this is because as a little kid my mom would always tell me that there are bad people in the world and that giving them any information about anything can be very harmful. But as I grew up and realized what was actually happening in my country I knew there were millions of others that were suffering against the “bad people” and we could only do something about it if the whole community came together to help. It was at that time when I was about 25, when I started to put some effort into trying to establish more just conditions within my country especially after the implication of extremely high food prices. This is when I started my first strike involving my…
