Personal Narrative: My Service Learning Project

Improved Essays
For my Service Learning Project I had the opportunity to volunteer with the HRSA Grant Project at the Collaborative Institute for Interprofessional Education and Practice also known as CI-PEP. This institute is located on the second floor of the nursing building. The mission of this institution is to provide biopsychosocial services to military families through counseling, supportive groups, and complementary and alternative medicine. This is a nursing, social work, psychology, and Veterans Center collaboration that focuses on holistic approaches to behavioral health. Because of the close proximity of the campus to one of the largest military bases, Fort Bragg, CI-PEP extends its services and programs to the community, including the military and their families. The institute does this to help military individuals, families, and communities deal more effectively with stressful events and eliminate risk in families and communities.
Staying healthy in body and mind helps families face the added demands of military life such as deployments and relocation. Therefore, CI- PEP offers prevention for a variety of holistic approaches that include therapies as treatment options for chronic pain, PTSD, and

During my experience with the Collaborative Institute for Interprofessional Education and Practice, I had the pleasure to work with Mrs. Mattie McLaurin, an assessment coordinator at the institute. As an assessment coordinator, she was responsible for entering records into a database, collecting documents, processing paperwork and scheduling clients. While working with Mrs. Mclaurin, I’ve learned that she served in the active army for nine years and and she has has been with the CI-PEP since it has emerged in 2013. I have worked closely by Mrs. Mclaurin since I have been volunteering with CI-PEP. As a veteran, she holds an abundance of knowledge when it comes to being in the military and attaining a

It is a pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Mr. José Angel Gutierrez who is applying for transfer admissions to the Army MSW program in Department of Social Work at Fayetteville State University. I have known Mr. Gutierrez since the fall of 2014 when he enrolled in my graduate-level social policy course at the University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Social Work. Since then he has kept me abreast of his progress in our MSW program and his service at Fort Sam Houston’s Brooke Army Medical Center. From the beginning, I have been impressed with Mr. Gutierrez’s intellectual curiosity, ability to quickly understand and analyze situations, and balance graduate school with his Army and other responsibilities, as well as his level…

My passion from the first day I walked on the naval base was to care for the men and woman who have so bravely gave his or her life for my freedom, a decade later it is still my desire; with the many years of critical care experience conjoined with the military nursing training, and an advance practice degree as a MHNP, I would be prepared to meet the patient assignments holistically to care for the military population. The goal is to work for the military as a government service (GS) provider; due to the long wait time for appointments and the shortage of advance practice mental health providers, it is imperative and my duty to complete the mission of becoming a MHNP. Drexel University is a prestigious educational institution that…

At the beginning of the semester I was somewhat intimated by the amount of course work that was expected of each student in this class. However, as time went on and I started to complete the assignments, it became clear how useful many of them were, particularly the resume and the career exploration paper. Both of these assignments were beneficial in their own way, despite the time and effort that went in to completing them according to the instructions. The resume and subsequent critiques from multiple sources yielded a professional document that is flawless and ready to be disseminated to potential employers after a minor customization to it based upon the job description and requirements. The career exploration assignment has taught me how…

Around 2.5 million American members of military services have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan ever since September 11,2001.America’s recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have increased the rates of trauma and mental illnesses toward American veterans. Most Military services have exposed members to a range of injuries and family pressures (.U.S Department of Veteran Affairs,2014). In August of 2012, President Barack Obama placed Executive Order directing Federal agencies to create a National Research Action Plan (NRAP) to reduce factors that contribute to these problems (Office of the Press Secretory,2012) The NRAP is a combination of Veterans affairs (VA), Departments of Defense (DOD), and Health and Human Services (HHS). They have all come together to put in effort in response that called for access to mental health service for veterans, service members, and military families (Office of the Press Secretory,2014).…

When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…

When people think about American veterans, they envision a person with honor, courage, and a noble life filled with the prosperity that their hard work entails. While this may be what every American wants to assume about the lives of veterans, it is not nearly close to what is really going on with many veterans in the United States today. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects around 10-12 percent of veterans, and if left untreated or ignored, it can wreak havoc on a life (Veterans, 5). The negative effects of PTSD range anywhere from sleep loss, anxiety, and depression to alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and suicide (Veterans, 8). Some veterans with PTSD end up homeless with no treatment and no way to save themselves, and that is…
