Personal Narrative: My Roller Coaster

I had always feared roller coasters as a young kid. I was scared of the astounding heights that some of them reach and their rapid acceleration. I was intimidated from the horrifying screams of terror from other kids on roller coasters, their high-pitched squeals of absolute terror and adrenaline rushing through their small bodies. For me that was very scary and made me not want to get near one of those monstrous horrifying contraptions. This all changed one day when my parents forced me to go to Six Flags with the rest of my family. Once we entered the gates and got our admission into the park my parents chose this very tall and sleek orange roller coaster that seemed mild for them, but to me it looked like I was going to die if I rode it. As we were trying to board what seemed at the time the death of me, a worker made me stand next to a weirdly animated cut out of a child with a measuring stick to see if I was tall enough to ride it. I hoped I wasn’t tall enough so I wouldn’t have to ride it, but I was quite a bit taller than the card board cut out. …show more content…
I feared that I would fall out of this old and semi-rusted seat with only a thin bar keeping me from moving forward. In what seemed like hours the ride finally started, it was a slow start and a progressive climb to the peak of the roller coaster. As we approached the ever so dooming peak I began to try and hold back the tears from coming out. Once we reached the top of the roller coaster the coaster came to a complete stop and allowed me to see all the people watching me from down below. Then gradually the roller coaster started to move and speed down the hill that we were on and approach a loop that seemed impossible for this roller coaster to make

A few years ago, on a class trip, my friends had asked me to ride at least one roller coaster. It was not a large roller coaster, but it made me queasy just looking at it. I was confident that I would be able to go on and enjoy the experience. My confidence quickly evaporated when we began climbing up the roller coaster’s first hill. The ride dropped, and I was screaming so loudly that I could only hear myself.…

I remember the gut wrenching feeling in my stomach as my best friend and I approached the tallest and fastest roller coaster at Hershey Park, called SkyRush. I am not sure why I agreed to go on this roller coaster, considering most of the time at amusement parks I entertain myself with food, and miniature rides that stay level to the ground. Unlike me, my friend liked the rush and heart dropping feeling of being at the apex of a roller coaster and then dropping down at maximum speed. Personally, I preferred the ground, where I remained in full control of my own safety. Yet that afternoon I found myself standing in line for SkyRush.…

Well I had gone to Six Flags and when I had got there I was so anxious to get on every ride in Six Flags but then I had heard a person on the Goliath scream ”stop the ride” it was so funny and scary at the same time. Then I saw that almost every ride had so many twists and turns and even circles that go round and round. Last year I had gone on a roller coaster which was the Mind Bender and it wasn’t so scary. The Mind Bender had so many circles that go round and round.…

In fact, if you have a fear that is just as bad as riding a roller coaster you can get over it, just like humans watch horror movies the face their fears and overcome them. Another example, in “Why We Crave Horror” Stephen King states that “horror movies may not surprise a scream out of us at some point, the way we may scream when the roller coaster twist through a complete 360 or plows through a lake at the bottom drop”(King “Why We Crave” 2). This explains that yes a scary movie can make you scared or afraid, but a roller coaster can make you feel scared but excited at the same…

In just a few seconds they would be off, gone to travel over the track in a bright blur. The screams enclosed the car with the force of adrenaline as it appeared and disappeared in a flash. I heard the happy and terrified screams of the people on the coaster and the booming voice of the ones controlling it while strolling around Paradise Pier in Disneyland with my family. At this point, I hadn't been on the roller coaster yet. I preferred to keep myself on the ground and not on the coaster going up side down into crazy drops.…

As I was brushing my teeth, I remembered what my cousin Sam had said to me the day before. "I, Sam Duncan," he declared, "am getting you on a roller coaster if it's the last thing I ever do. " I had laughed and said he was crazy. I was terrified of heights (I had fairly major acrophobia).…

Then the third gate was the worst, who could hear people screaming their heads off, and feel the ground shake like there was an earthquake, and it was our turn next!!! I was TERRIFIED, Claire had fingernail marks in her arm, and as our cart emptied of the people before us, I got light headed, I vaguely remember getting in and buckled. I started to take deep breaths I was starting to feel better when I felt how secure the harnesses were. But then we started to move, at first it was okay, slow and easy going around the first corner, but then I saw the unbelievable hill that was 170 ft tall, this ride brakes 7 different records in the world and one is it’s got the longest drop for a wing coaster!!! Slowly climbing to the top, felt longer than the car ride!…

I was determined to conquer my fears of heights and roller coasters. The day was growing old and the sun began to set. We had been standing in line for what seemed like hours. My legs ached from standing up and I was longing for a refreshing drink to cool me off. I honestly thought we would never make it to the ride; that we might as well turn around and go home before I could whimp out again.…

However, just as I said this the spiritless roller coaster attendant strapped me in permanently ensuring I couldn’t back out. After the attendants strapped everyone in, they did their whole spiel on how we were going to have a great time, but the words muddled in my mind as I was more focused on breathing. The car moved onward and screeched at us as if in warning. Then suddenly the car stopped, I’m pretty sure just to spite us.…

I had never had so much fun with obnoxiously loud carnival music blasting in my ears, small children stupidly goofing off in front of me, and the smell of food that was so greasy it made my stomach turn. Things that usually gave me a migraine, now made me intoxicated on my own cheerfulness. However, everyone knows that all good things must come to an end. Shortly after my dad and I had exited the carousel, it was time for us to leave the park.…
