As an Orthodox Jew, religion plays a central role in my life. I attended a private Jewish high school, where much of my day was devoted to religious studies. When I construct a mathematical proof, I utilize the logic skills that I honed studying Talmud. But I also appreciate the humanities, which are more open to interpretation. Talmud, I believe, provides the best of both worlds; it adheres to strict logical principles while leaving much open to interpretation, allowing me to mentally explore different paths and see where each one leads me. While I no longer take Talmud as a class I still make time to study it several times a week, to tend to the intellectual spark that it kindled within

Race is, according to Merriam-webster.com (2015), “any one of the groups that human beings can be divided into based on shared distinctive physical traits”. One’s race is something that is usually noticed right away. Oftentimes, race has traits that are visibly distinguishable. These distinguishable traits include skin color, which is the most visible distinguished trait regarding race, hair texture, and other facial features. When individuals come from interracial marriages, which is a child born from parents of different races, these physical traits can become blurred (Healey & O’Brien, 2015, p. 16-18).…

The most I have engaged easily with in the course so far would be understanding the problems relating to treating Indigenous Australians. This is because a lot of this had interested me and was something that I was not aware of before. The cultural competency was another topic I had engaged easily with in this course because through many readings and lectures I was able to easily understand the three areas of cultural competence. The most challenging part in this course would have been this topic of white privilege and racism.…

Books have made a huge impact on my future goals; besides getting to explore a wide range of philosophies and personalities, writers such as Plato and Nietzsche influenced my perception of various aspects of my life and the world as a whole. Specifically, On the Genealogy of Morals, by Nietzsche, provoked my curious mind and ever-growing cravings for each and every element of knowledge. It grabbed my attention to how biology and philosophy could be braided into one; I loved how it united two perceived to be fundamentally divergent systems, portrayed their interactions and how they could proceed together, thus leading to a quantum leap in both. Further on, it steered my mind to focus on uniting every aspect of my life and discerning that all it requires to merge my keen interest in pursuing a degree in finance and my lifelong dedication to martial arts, is creating a balance.…
