Personal Narrative: My Rock-I Came From A Native American

Decent Essays
Rock- I come from a Native American background. My ancestors lived in the Ozarks. I rarely think of them even when I see what is happening on the news in places like South Dakota. I forget that they are my rock and my history. I honestly am not that informed of my history. I haven’t been told much about it, but I also haven’t asked much about it. I don’t even know what tribe my ancestors were a part of.
River- My grandfather was in the air force, but my father was not. My father is a proud American and so am I, and like Dr. McVicker the songs of the United States of America ring in my ears. The Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and God Bless America remind me of my childhood and singing them in music class brings a smile to my face.

Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

Throughout my life I have been part many diverse cultures and of many community that contain a wide range of race and ethnicity. I was born in Ecuador and moving to the United States was a huge slap in the face. The culture and the way thing were done here compared to my home country was totally different. The life style in Ecuador was harsh and unpleasing but in the states life was so much more pleasurable with all the opportunities that are given me. The only problem is that people where closed minded.…

Excuse me while I kindly blow your ''90's kids genders'' out of the water, unceremoniously bury it, and tap dance on its unmarked grave while singing a lovely tune. I have held my tongue this whole time and I feel that I can no longer sit by while this bombards my timeline; in doing so I have been a bystander to this hatefulness and I can not bring myself to be one anymore. Before you lot continue to run around judging people for their lives, which frankly you have no business doing, to begin with, screaming at the top of your tiny childlike lungs that transgender is a new thing that people have constructed because they're ''snowflakes''…

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. The small diverse campus allows for people of completely different backgrounds and cultures to have real relationships that they might not have even noticed anywhere else in the world.…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

What I think about the book it is well organized and each chapter is explaning a subject during all the book Snyder is using Primary and Secondary sources she explains from the beginning of American Natives to the End of Native American as we can see in the first chapter she was able to explain how the Natives would be and act. A part of a book that empressed me was that before the Natives would not care in the race for slaves they would never think that white would be superior than blacks or indians. For them everyone was the same everyone had an was in the verge to be a slave it all depend more on the age than the skin color it depend more on the age than their origin (Africa or Europe), but it was until the Spanish came it was until the…

What does it mean to be a proud American? To me it means that we can be free and have rights. You can make a decision like where you want to work, live, who you want to marry, etc. It is being proud that you have people who risked their lives for your freedom. So many citizens don’t know or care that there is so many wars and disasters going on in other countries.…

To be an American is to be able to choose freely. Acts of terror seem to be more and more common, according to the media. In times of terror and strife the citizens of the United States of America come together no matter what beliefs and opinions we have to defeat the opposition. Secondly, America was built on immigrants, and as such we are open to diverse races and beliefs, and Americans consider people they have just met as friends. This is what I believe is my American Identity.…
