As I reflect back on the past three years of my high school career, a flood of emotions circles around in my mind. I think of the friends I’ve made, the teachers I’ve had, and the time I dedicated to my school. While I have a multitude of fond memories to look back on, I will profoundly cherish the years spent as a two-time state basketball champion. My freshman year was when it all began. The 2013 volleyball season had just come to a close, and there were two words I was dreading to use for the next five months: Coach Dotson. Practices were brutal; there was yelling, chasing, throwing, and constant running for the smallest mishaps. The man was just crazy, plain and simple. We were playing the undefeated Brunswick High School out of Lawrenceville, Virginia. Upon reviewing the team in the days leading up to the game, we saw that they did not just beat the teams they played- they slaughtered the teams they played. They beat all of their opponents by at least fifty points. Everyone was positive about the game, but deep down, there was some major doubt as to how it would actually turn out. And indeed, this realization made me excited. Even being this close to the state championship, I was still ready to lose. I was more than ready for the season to finally end. However, when I walked into the Seigel Center to prepare for this upcoming game, my whole thought process completely changed. Seeing the stadium full of our fans, and the countless signs held high in the air, saying, “GO WARRIORS” and “Road to Richmond,” immediately made my adrenaline start pumping. Had I not stuck with basketball, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. The hardships I faced revealed to me that not everything is going to go my way, but in time, everything will eventually fall into place the way it is supposed to be. I am immensely thankful for my coaches that pushed me, my teammates that encouraged me, and for my family and Savior that loved me, during the time I was at my lowest.
