Personal Narrative: My Return To Spelman

Improved Essays
I entered my spring semester in January of 2014 with an outstanding balance at my home institution. If I could not pay the remaining balance, I would not be allowed to return to Spelman in fall of 2014.Thankfully, I earned enough money through my internship during the summer of 2014 to pay my remaining balance down and enroll for classes.

With the additional of my parents no longer able to financially supported my education. I began paying for college entirely on my own. In an effort to reduce the cost of attending Spelman, I moved off campus. I took on multiple jobs, working the same number of hours as a full time employee while maintaining status as a full time student.

I made my best attempt to manage my course load, research and work.

I have played baseball ever since I was a young kid, but somehow, at seventeen I still had numerous struggles with it. You would think after my grandpa being drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Major League baseball team, and my dad getting a full ride to the University of Denver their skill would have rubbed off on me, but you would be wrong. I wasn't terrible, I could hit a 90 mile per hour fastball and I could, for the most part, field a ground ball. However, I was definitely not about to be scouted by the college scouts.…

I made the leap to a big city called Detroit from a small city called my home. I live in a small urban city, downriver, called Wyandotte.…

I remember my sister crying the night before her flight, nervous of her transition to Cornell. However, during her first winter break back, my sister came back with a happy face. She spent the following weeks talking about her hallmates, lunch with her professors, and her highly intellectual peers. My brother soon followed suit. They both talked about the intimate relationships they were able to foster through opportunities to interact with the faculty, such as college-wide barbeques and eating dinner at professors’ homes.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

The Department of Education recently released a memo admitting that repayment rates on student loans have been grossly exaggerated. Data from 99.8% of schools across the country has been manipulated to cover up growing problems with the $1.3 trillion in outstanding student loans. New calculations show that more than half of all borrowers from 1,000 different institutions have defaulted on or not paid back a single dollar of their loans over the last seven years. This comes in stark contrast to previous claims and should call into question any statistics provided by government agencies.…
