Personal Narrative: My Return To Mankato

Improved Essays
The Return I’ve been at MSU for a couple of weeks now and I’m so close to midterms that just thinking about it gives me anxiety. I’m from Mankato so it was very easy for me to return home. I don’t have my car on campus so I basically return home every friday to retrieve it. It’s nice coming home even though it’s only for a short period of time. For me, it’s almost like remembering where you came from in a way. Being back home helps me remember I’m not alone here at MSU. I miss having family meals the most to be honest so that’s usually what I come back for. My family had invited me over to dinner and offered to make me my favorite food. I chose my mom’s enchiladas which were so delicious, it basically makes my mouth water. Afterwards, we had planned to watch the movie American Heist which was supposedly an action movie. In the end, we decided to play pictionary instead because my little sister, Giuliani, insisted since we haven’t had a family game night in forever. I think playing pictionary was the right choice because I had so much fun playing against my family. We filled the room with laughter because at one point my two youngest siblings had to draw pictures against each other and obviously since they’re youngins their skills aren’t the best. Being able to laugh with them was definitely something I missed most. I was able to be myself and not have to deal with them later so I feel like that was the best thing because my parents and I didn’t get along much. That’s what I don’t miss. Arguing with my parents and having them affect my mood. It was a total buzzkill for me when I lived with them and I’m so glad that I no longer abide by their

Growing up in Michigan has been a wonderful experience, but upon completing my education I would like to experience a new area. Taking every life experience I have had and apply it in new ways to other parts of the United States, different from where I got to grow up. By taking what I know, I can spread what I have learned to other citizens with different life styles or experiences. From waking up to the smell of freshly made tortillas and warm beans with rice on Sunday mornings and rushing through the morning to attend noon mass to the tradition of going from house to house singing lullabies to Jesus on Christmas eve, food and catholic tradition are just a small part of what being Hispanic means to me. While there are a multitude of distinct experiences that have guided me to rediscover what Hispanic truly means, I believe that everything can be simplified to family values. Last year, I left home to attend a university that is a few hours away from my parents' house. At first it was exciting with a newfound sense of liberty; a part of me really enjoyed going to eat at random times of the day or…

My personal Michigan hero is my father. For this essay I chose my father because all my life I have looked up to him, even when I was too young to realize it, because my dad has guided me through life, teaching me valuable life lessons and will always be there for me and my family. My dad has changed so much in his life for my brother and I, spent hours for a day for years raising us to be the people we are today and I could never repay that. At a young age my father’s parents divorced, and he did not see his real father often because he was in the Coast Guard. He then vowed at a young age, and then to his future wife(my mother) that he would never divorce and do that if he had children.…
