Improved Essays
My response to sexual assault stands out among the personal accomplishments of which I am proudest. For over a year, I struggled in therapy to learn to control the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I took solace in the relationships I forged at school: I revered my professors and met several like-minded peers who became friends. Despite everything, I made the Dean’s list for that Spring semester. I devoted myself to my work in the Writing Center, even volunteering to visit undergraduate classes as a guest lecturer. I couldn't agree more, sometimes I think to myself as well if I have any repressed memories that impact my personality. I never used to be so compulsive or expressive, but I think that has to do with a defense mechanism of mine. I know I have some repressed memories that have molded my personality to be more defensive at times, although I don't like that myself, I do feel it is a defense mechanism to be guarded for protection. I honestly did the same thing with the denial mechanism with my best friend during high school. I was in denial because of my friends passing just wasn't acceptable, and when people approached or confronted me, I pretended as though he was on a long vacation.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

In “Overcoming Abuse - My Story”, Shawna Platt talks about her own experience with abuse and how she was able to survive and eventually overcome it. Platt grew up with abusive parents, in an environment of alcoholism which was filled with physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, anxiety, and denial. Platt believes that forgiveness is important in order to stop the cycle of abuse so it doesn 't get passed on to the next generation. Platt’s usage of pathos, tone, and detailed descriptions of abuse in the essay accomplishes her efforts to inform the reader that forgiving others is the key to overcoming abuse and moving on in life.…

A big issue for me was the fact that, even though Julie was abused by her father, there had to be a way to play the side of Julie that it’s hurt and not angry. My first instinct was to play fear. I thought that Julie kept this fear for her father over the years. When I found out that Julie more than scare was hurt finally could have an overall vision of what my main purpose was. She is there at the hospital because she needs to face her father before he passes away, she knows that this is her last chance to close that door and start a new page, even though she will not admit it Child abuse is a big deal no matter what it is wrong and there are no excuses for this, nevertheless a big deal for me was to find the way of showing that hurt adult that Julie is.…

I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. Why should I be selected as Homecoming Queen? It is funny that you asked. This is a question that I have asked myself since freshman year when I saw my first UNCG Homecoming. It is reported that one in five women and one in 71 men have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. Being a victim of sexual assault is one of the most traumatic types of criminal acts against a person. Victims find it difficult to discuss being a victim and it is important that victim resources be available for them. For many victims the trauma is greater than a physical attack but an emotional and spiritual attack on a person. It is important for investigators and higher education administrators to be able to protect the victim’s privacy while prosecuting sexual assault cases.…

One of the reasons I would be honored to be a student ambassador is because I want to introduce and familiarize other prospective students with the school that I love so much, that has opened so many doors of opportunities, introduced me to so many amazing people, and has given me a top notch education. I want to encourage students who are perhaps unsure if WSU is right for them, or if college in general is right for them, that WSU and all that it has to offer makes it the place for anyone, from all backgrounds, all experiences, and all areas of interests. This is because WSU also offers majors, clubs and organizations, and communities in which anyone can find a sense of belonging and acceptance. Aside from the school itself, WSU is home to…

When I categorize the memorable moments I have in theatre I find they rarely have to do with the moments on stage despite the fact that I an actor. The moments that make me laugh uncontrollably, want to scream and punch a wall, sob into my pillow all happen in interactions with audience members after a performance. My most memorable moment in theatre all surrounds a little boy who never told me his name. I was working at Florida Studio Theatre (FST) as an Acting Apprentice.
