I never knew going on vacation would change my life forever. We where shopping and i was planning on buying a souvenir. A homeless man was leaning against one of the shops. I asked my mom for ten dollars from her purse. She gave me the money…
I was only 14 when I went on my mission trip, but experiencing that such a young age has shaped me for who I am. I was involved in three mission trips, which all occurred in the States, but in all three-mission trips I helped people who I believe needed it most. I was proud of what I did and I think it was something that not a lot of people did at my age. One of my biggest motivators were the people I was helping. After going on my first trip, I had bonded with others and had made me realize what the real world is like outside a small town in Iowa.…
The thing about running is that you hate it until it’s over, at least for me that’s true. Personally, I like running, and it gives me a chance to get out and work towards something. All throughout high school, I’ve run track, and for two years I ran cross-country, both are great sports. The two years I ran cross-country made me wish I ran all four years. If you’re part of more than one sport, it’s natural to choose a favorite.…
My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…
My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…
Throughout my life, I have been the victim of several burglaries. At the age of seven, someone, in broad daylight, broke into our house and shot my dad in the chin. I was displaced to my aunt's house for weeks and missed most of my 1st grade year. When I was seventeen, I walked in on my home being robbed by some local kids. They were upstairs when I came into the house and escaped through a window, but the idea that I could have come home earlier still haunts me.…
I remember the day I return to the United States from China at the age 6. I grew up being immersed with English in which consequently made me forgotten most of my Chinese. Before I even noticed, I had hard time communicating with my mother and grandmother. I took the first year level Chinese course at my last college in hope to better communicate with my parents, however, it was not enough. Every time we try to have a conversation, Google Translate would accompany us.…
I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…
Its kind of hard to imagine a place pure and free of teenage issues and dramas. I never thought I would be able to escape my problems in the real world. I never thought I would be able to let go. But know as I sit on this rock, staring at the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen, feeling the wind blow my hair back, and smelling the wonderful scent of nature, I know I've escaped. I have finally found a place where I can let go of all my worries and all my stress.…
Summer Session I already came to an end. This class flew by so quickly. Since my last class participation assessment, I think I continued to show good work. I tried my best in class. Although all the reading in Mosaic I was amazing, Unit 2 was my favorite.…
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. On August 12, 2009 my family and I boarded a plane that would supposedly help us realize the American dream, as we travelled to the United States. Don’t get me wrong, me, my dad, and my two siblings weren’t completely unaware of life in the US.…
I got to experience two Spring Breaks of sorts. I went one place close to home and one place farther and much colder than Kansas. First, I went to Springfield, MO then for the second half of the week I went to colorful and breathtaking Colorado. Both were fun even though I started off the break with the flu. I started to feel bad right after school was out on Thursday.…
August 3, 2010: on this day I, a curious 11 year old who had never left the United States, boarded my Cathay Pacific flight from New York to Hong Kong. I had been waiting for this day to come since I found out about the trip 3 weeks before. My dad frequently traveled there for business and I had seen his pictures and videos of Hong Kong and had wanted to travel like him. Here was my opportunity. My dad had already flown down earlier on Sunday, so it was just my mom and I. I awoke from my restless night to my mom gently shaking me, and telling me to get ready.…
Essay In August 2016, my family and I went on vacation. Every year during the summer we usually go on vacation but this specific trip was one of the best i've ever been on. In July, we were starting to plan our vacation, and we thought we should do something that would be fun and would be an amazing experience. So, we decided that we were going to drive to Roanoke and stay at a hotel for the night, and the next day, we would drive to Tennessee.…
I was on a Jesus High, so I figured everything would be fine. Nothing at all would have been wrong. I was most definitely wrong. My boyfriend wouldn’t reply to my text messages, and he was ignoring my phone calls. He finally texted me say he was at work, and he would be off about 4.…
