Personal Narrative: My Removal From The MSW Program

Improved Essays
Prior from being removed from the MSW program in the academic year of 2015; I experienced discrimination, harassment, and the loss of a fellow veteran. The harsh reality of veteran suicide came upon me when a dear friend could no longer continue battling depression and terminated his life. The loss I experienced affected me profoundly, which furthered my poor performance academically. Since my removal from the MSW program, I have used the time to cope and mourn the hardships I experienced. In addition, I maintained contact with one of the academic program advisers; in order to develop an academic plan that would lead me to success in completing my degree upon reinstatement. To ensure my success within the MSW program and my remaining

We figured that my niece would have to see the error of her ways, get help, take classes, go to group therapy sessions, find a job and conquer her case plan. How long could that possibly take six months? The good news was that my sister who is the children’s Grandmother would be there to help us, getting the babies from daycare and coming home to help out while I juggled homework. We had it all planned out. My father, husband and I took turns taking my niece to her court dates and classes.…

Contrary to popular belief, I do in fact have CH experience. I worked in CHC under Xardas back in {DoD} and served as 1stSgt/SgtMaj and Chaplain. While that was some time ago, and things have no doubt changed since then, I have no doubt that the CH department can get me up to scratch. I don't really have any objections to this…

By the time I received the email announcement that University of Michigan Health System diagnosed me with Acquired Dyscalculia, I felt like sinking into a bottomless glacial. Everything around me appeared as featureless hollow darkness. I heard with a chill on my back that the car accident occurred last summer was speculated to be cause. It was on way home back from Thailand, where I went to support the education at Vieng Neua Primary School as a volunteer. I was afraid, indeed, that the dyscalculia—a name that I had not heard before and a disease I was totally not familiar with—would jeopardize and ruin my study and life.…

I managed to reach a point where I began making false promises to myself and others about addressing my situation. Among those empty promises was the one where I claimed I would give up drinking, attend rehab and try to get my life back on track. I even fiddled with the thought of seeking inpatient assistance if things weren't working as planned. Let's be clear and fair.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

I remember the day I return to the United States from China at the age 6. I grew up being immersed with English in which consequently made me forgotten most of my Chinese. Before I even noticed, I had hard time communicating with my mother and grandmother. I took the first year level Chinese course at my last college in hope to better communicate with my parents, however, it was not enough. Every time we try to have a conversation, Google Translate would accompany us.…

My college career at Western Washington University started with the desire of one day becoming a speech language pathologist. My passion for the field had already been cultivated by an internship that I acquired during my senior year of high school for 60-hours in early intervention SLP services. While most of my high school classmates had aspirations of meeting new people and having fun in college, I had dreams of getting the opportunity to observe and work in the speech clinic at WWU; unfortunately, all of those dreams seemed to come to a startling halt only a couple months into my college career. During my freshman year of college, my family was suffering from the recession and we lost our home in December of 2012. This moment in my life…

Growing up in a Vietnamese family in America, the value of life is highlighted by working hard and knowing your roots. Stories about family hardship and history told from the older generation in my family are mostly ones of war. I have heard many different elements of war: war crimes, anticommunist sentiments, and the escape from Vietnam. Hearing these stories has always resonated with me, motivating me to work hard for the sacrifice of those before me. In that sense, I worked rigorously to provide myself an education from the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas and was excited about pursuing a professional health career.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

So far in my past three years of being at WSU, I have dealt with some very stressful and traumatic experiences, but it was always school and being surrounded by my professors and classmates that kept me focused on maintaining my grades and taking advantage of every opportunity WSU had to offer me. Overcoming these challenges while in school, like a sexual assault, was difficult and overwhelming, but I know that I would not have been able to do it without the support of all those I was surrounded by, and I believe it is these experiences that have made me a better student today. I want to advocate and be an ally for other students who have experienced these types of challenges, so they know that WSU will always offer its support and guidance, and refuses to let anyone just simply fail. I also have a confident and determined attitude, and refuse to simply give up during tough times that require extra work, time, and dedication, but instead believe that it is these qualities that build a strong individual who is able to thrive in any situation. I am also an effective problem solver, even when unorganization, time, and place is a consideration, because one must not allow insignificant factors like these, alter their chances of…
