My cousin Marilyn has been a strong mother figure in my mom’s life from when she was very young. My mom would spend summers in Melbourne, Australia when she was a teenager with Marilyn and her family. My maternal grandmother is full blown Italian; her parents both born in Italy. When our family left Italy, half went to the states and the other half went to Australia. Melbourne has a surprisingly large Italian community.

I couldn't agree more, sometimes I think to myself as well if I have any repressed memories that impact my personality. I never used to be so compulsive or expressive, but I think that has to do with a defense mechanism of mine. I know I have some repressed memories that have molded my personality to be more defensive at times, although I don't like that myself, I do feel it is a defense mechanism to be guarded for protection. I honestly did the same thing with the denial mechanism with my best friend during high school. I was in denial because of my friends passing just wasn't acceptable, and when people approached or confronted me, I pretended as though he was on a long vacation.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

My mother is not an exceptionally beautiful woman. She would not be remembered as a modern-day Helen of Troy, whose face launched a thousand ships, or a sumptuous vixen like Marilyn Monroe. She is a woman who seamlessly blends into a crowd, with a face people could confuse with another; maybe a friend's mom, a distant relative or the owner of a bakery down the street. She has the face of a million women and none of them are exceptionally special; none of them exceptionally beautiful. My mother is a plain-Jane; a woman whose attraction is reflected through her personality.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

The photo featured above is that of an Italian grandmother with her granddaughter. The grandmother and granddaughter, though unable to effectively communicate, have found a way to come together and enjoy their time. The grandmother is originally from Italy and therefore is unable to speak much English, if any at all. On the other hand, the granddaughter was born and raised in the United States and therefore, other than the basics, speaks very little Italian. This image was chosen as one that would educate others to show that language does not always have to be a life altering barrier.…
