While I was younger, I had loved to read and would read books throughout my elementary school days. Yet, when high school began I stopped due to me adjusting to high school and regrettably becoming apathetic to my surroundings. However, in my second year of high school my English teacher had moved away and his assistant became our new teacher. When he first joined our class, he was quite strict, but always pushed us to do our best. This did not change, in fact, it became even worse as the year progressed. Yet, I did not hate it as much as I thought I would. He pushed me to further my writing as he noticed I had a talent for it when he read my paper of a Shakespearean play. He saw the potential in me and so he would always discuss my writing and on how to improve. Thus, by the end of the year I had received an A in his class all thanks to the effort I had put in with the motivation he had given me. My English teacher that year, was the first teacher who helped me demonstrate the potential hidden within me. I had rediscovered my love for reading and my new love for writing. My relationship with literacy was beginning to blossom through literature

Does rejection or determination push you to go beyond the limits of what one expects of you? Most everyone would say it does, but does this only affect those of us who want to be writers? It definitely does not, nor is it limited to anyone of a particular language. People of different backgrounds, all have the same urge to learn something not entirely expected of them, even if it is just a different language. The writings of people, while very similar, have a great number of differences.…

A girl at school once asked me, “How are you in this constant state of reading?” I laughed because the answer is simple: I love to read. I chose books as a symbol because reading and literature is very important to my culture and my family. When my father was young, his grandmother used to read to him every day, and my father did the same for my siblings and I. Ever since I was a little girl I have loved to read, and I own many books that I keep on shelves.…

I love to read and I wouldn’t be able too if it weren’t for learning the basics of writing. I remember the first time I walked into the school library at South Forrest Attendance Center. It was very quiet so quiet that you could hear a pinsel drop in the hallway, which reminded me of church like the library was a sacred place you had to respect. The librarian's name was Mrs.Smith, she seemed nice but I knew if I ever lost a book I would be in deep trouble.…

Reading- I will find time to read every night for at least 30 min. This will help me keep a consistent reading schedule that will allow me to manage my time wisely while still getting to read every day. I can do this by making a designated time for myself to read each night before I go to bed. I will need to create a routine for myself to follow in regards to my reading. When I read, I will make sure I slow down enough to fully absorb all the details the author has put in the book.…

Children have been taught how to read for generations, we all have different reading levels based on how much interest we have in reading, and who taught us to read and gave us our passion for it. For me, my love of reading started when I was younger reading with my mother after school, on the weekends and any other free time we had. Every day, when I came home from school I read whether it was by myself or with my mom. She would read with me every day until I finally learned how and could read by myself. Because of my mom reading to me and with me, my reading level has often been higher than others in my classes.…

I have always looked at myself as a person who’s better at numbers than writing, and reading. I have never really enjoyed reading or writing, because I never been good at it. It felt like it took me forever to read a book, and that alone made me just watch a movie instead of reading a book, and that didn’t make me a better reader or writer. I was not surprised that I wasn’t good at it though, because I never practiced. Before College when I got a writing assignment, I often opened a word document, and stared at the document for ten minutes before I came up with something to write.…

My Reading Life My first memory of reading was probably at about age four when I could actually read a book on my own. I never was a big reader even back then, I would usually just look at the pictures. I remember growing up and going through school I always had to read twenty to thirty minutes for homework. I would always pick simple books with words I knew and probably below my level of reading.…

Reading hasn’t always been an enjoyable pastime for me. My experiences with reading have had their ups and downs, but in the end reading has made my education hurdles a bit smaller. Beginning at an early age, my mom would read stories to me every night before bed. One of my favorites was My First Bible Stories, which was a book with my short Bible stories. Goldilocks and the Three Bears was another one of my favorite childhood books that my Mawmaw used to read to me whenever I would spend the night with her.…

I believe that every individual has their own staircase to literacy; my first step was learning how to talk, and my last step is still to be determined. You see, so far I have climbed nearly 16 years up this staircase and have encountered multiple variations of ideas and suggestions about literacy. Luckily, my mentors have never failed me and have always done whatever it takes to get me to the next step. My most recent mentor was my twelfth grade English teacher. In the beginning of the year she introduced us to the eight habits of mind.…
