As important as it is to be informed of our history, it is equally essential that I educate myself on the current issues in America. An example is the recent refugee migration. America has admitted almost 85,000 refugees in 2016, which maximizes this year’s limit. This is heroic because countries in distress are witnessing families being killed for choosing to practice a different religion, while our government declares each citizen free. Our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are privileges that I feel are taken for granted by many Americans. Taking full advantage of my rights and freedoms stated in the Constitution, specifically the Bill of Rights like voting, bearing arms, freedom of religion, and speech, is at my core because they are not a gift available to all, like the refugees. To assist their integration, I will welcome and not judge them based on their race, nationality, or religion. Many people have welcomed me into their country by not judging or discriminating against me, and I will offer that same
