Personal Narrative: My Reflection On Fifth Grade Math Class

Improved Essays
I was assigned to work together with Lisa Adamson and Katie Doherty. My group and I were in charge to teach chapter eight sections four and five. Chapter eight section four was about functions, and chapter eight section five is about coordinate system. Surprisingly, our group previously taught a lesson of a fifth grade math class, and our sections tied into teaching up to the middle and high school level. I enjoyed these sections and I will discuss how I felt working as my group and how I individually performed. As a group, I feel we understood the sections fairly well. Even though these sections were a little more challenging than the previous sections, but I give my group credit for trying to teach the sections. I will say I feel my group could’ve performed better such as communication. Each person was took control of a few topics for each sections. However, I feel that my group did not present all the topics equally. Unfortunately, we did not get through all of the sections because there was more examples problems than necessary. Another thing I would like to add is that I felt that when I taught, Katie was trying to hold a conversation with the class. Lisa and I felt that Katie was trying to present all of her topics with no consider of time and allow time for us to teach our topics. I would rate Katie a seven out of ten. As for Lisa, I feel she did the best she …show more content…
Out of my out group, I would say I enjoy math more than the rest of my group, and I was excited to teach these sections. I will admit, I was a little nerve to teach these last two sections to the class. I did not know if my classmates were going to understand and grasp the idea of how to graph a line, find the slope, and create an equation. I would rate myself a nine out of ten. If I were to teach these two sections again, I would prefer to work alone, or split the sections into two

They all commented on how they enjoyed to reading, working with lego’s, ocean counters, math flash cards, and using the white boards. This group is definitely a hands-on group of learners and very interactive. They commented on how they learned more after the lesson from the results of their post-text. They really liked knowing they are smarting now knowing their numbers 1-10 and being able to tell me which number is greater than, less than, or equal too. The timing of the feedback redirected them or set them on the correct path.…

Everything i found in this weeks assignment was very broken down into steps for us and very helpful. Knowing the differences and similarities between andragogy and pedagogy was important and helpful as well. Throughout this whole quarter, I would say that I have learned a lot in this class. Not only that I learned what is in the syllabus but also the importance of being able to apply my understandings on a problem. I believe that the instructor did a great job in addressing the learning outcomes in this class by helping us in understanding the concepts that we need to learn in order complete this course. One of the learning outcomes of this course is that each students should be able to describe, interpret and predict the propagation of energy via waves, using applied conservation of energy principles. Before this class, I have learned about the law of conservation of energy in PHYS221 with Micheal Greiner.…

I really enjoyed this week’s assignments. Specifying goals and objectives have always been something I have enjoyed, since being introduced in a research course at the undergraduate level. I also enjoyed creating the line graph and utilizing subscripts and superscripts. Chapters 3 and 4 have been my favorite chapters thus far. Learning new things can be fun!…

On December 3rd, Mrs. Neth allowed an observation of her second grade class. Mrs. Neth teaches at Heber Hunt elementary in Sedalia. At the beginning of the observation, Mrs. Neth’s second grade class gathered at the carpet to talk about what the students read on the previous day. The students were required to read a two page passage and a story out of their textbook; both were about jellyfish. Mrs. Neth began a picture walk while the students were still sitting at the carpet.…

Many steps must be considered when creating and preparing an activity plan. Specifically, there is the preplanning stage, activity beginning stage, activity middle stage, and activity closing stage. It is significant to include all of the points within your activity plan to effectively teach a lesson. The teacher must prepare the students for the activity and allow the students to understand what the central ideas of the lesson are. I had the opportunity to use an activity plan with students in the classroom, which allowed me to gain experience with second graders.…

“Techniques” section I loved great idea speaking with the LD child separately and discussing helpful strategies which allow them to excel in class and not fail. (I will definitely use this technique in my classroom.) “Distraction vs. Attention” I had no idea a child who is distracted focuses on everything and a child with an attention disorder focuses on nothing. I found it interesting with in ten minutes Lavoie demonstrated how a teacher can cause a group of individuals to not want to take risks in participating out of fear of being ridiculed. Not once during the first ten minutes of the lecture did Lavoie praise an individual for the correct answer.…

I loved the way Mr. Hossack conducted this particular lesson because of the way the students took responsibility for their own learning! The way he guided them through a complex process was brilliant. Desired Results-- learning objectives: Mr. Hossack not only posted the class objectives on the board, he discussed them with the class and made sure they understood the vocabulary used in the objective as well as what learning outcome to expect. The students were clearly accustomed to discussing the objectives before beginning the activities. Assessment Evidence Mr. Hossack used both formal and informal methods of assessment.…

Sitting in a hard plastic chair in my math class I felt paralyzed. The heat in the room was unimaginable on the cool autumn day. I could not be the only one that was feeling it. At the same time I could barely keep head straight as the math test stared back at me with harsh eyes telling me “you will never be able to pass this class,” in a slithering tone. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of my face.…

I almost had a heart attack when I received my math test with a big fat red F on top of it. It was the third F I've gotten alone in just math class. I was good in the other subjects such as, physical education, science, and reading. The only thing that I had trouble with was math, I hated math and I didn't understand a single thing that was happening when she taught a certain subject. I was going to have to do summer school if I didn’t get my grade up, and I already had my vacation planned out.…

Class Facilitation Assessment • What steps did you take, and when, to prepare for the class session? What additional steps if any, do you in retrospect wish you’d taken? To prepare for my facilitation, I carefully assigned readings I thought would be useful/helpful to students who had and had not seen a lot of Disney movies. Throughout the semester, I set aside time to watch a few Disney movies I hadn’t seen, as well as re-watched movies I hadn’t seen since I was a kid.…

I really liked this class overall. I liked the creative project at the end of semester, it would be neat to have other assignments like that. I liked reading the Neil Gaiman works, but I think this class would benefit from studying other “popular” authors who deal with real-world themes. I really liked reading The Sandman and The Wolves in the Walls and finding merit in works like graphic novels and children’s books. I think that reading some of those works would be greatly beneficial for next year’s class.…

Reflection About Classroom Teaching Experience Being an educator is a challenge and a new learning experience each time. As an educator, I am entrusted with the responsibility of shaping the way students think and feel in the classroom. I have always wanted to be an educator and share my experiences with the new generation of nurses. When I was assigned to work with professor Lynette Rayman to do my classroom teaching experience, I was thrilled because the topic I chose was chronic kidney disease which also happens to be my area of expertise. I had to incorporate my previous learning experiences to make my presentation lively.…
