Personal Narrative: My Reflection Of My Writing

Improved Essays
In my university course work to date, this is my first actual writing course. I will admit that upon reflection, this seems a bit frightening because I fear that I may not be as skilled as I should be in writing at this juncture in my educational journey. With this in mind, I cannot delineate many strategies that I have developed that have worked for me to improve my writing. One thing I have done in my courses to date, has been to read other student’s writings in discussion posts in order to determine how they organize their writing. I then evaluate what I believe is the most effective way they communicate their main points and supporting details. I have gleaned ideas from other writers with the hope that I can use their effective methods …show more content…
An associate of mine, who is a skilled writer, advised me to just write free-style and then go back and edit, but I have difficulty doing this. Consequently, I spend more time writing than is probably necessary. I would realize an important goal if I could find a method to use to break this habit. That will probably come when I become more proficient at drafting. Larkin (2012) states, “The key here is NOT to try to write a final draft. Drafting is just a way of getting started” (Unit 3.2: Drafting, par. 1). I need to learn how to be more relaxed in approaching preliminary writing, in order to make better use of my time spent …show more content…
My philosophy is that the more you read, the better you write. I also believe that in order to write well, an individual must spend time reading different genres of writing. I have done this over the course of my lifetime and have taught my children to do the same. Obviously, writing can take many forms, and I believe that every exposure you have to reading various materials improves your writing in one way or another. Another strength in my writing comes from my ability to use a thesaurus in order to add greater dimension to my writing. Garnett and Sostrom (1983) suggest to “Write with variety in mind” (p. 138). Using a thesaurus helps adds me do this, and assists me as I attempt to add depth and breadth to my

The nonfiction book On Writing Well by William Zinsser is about nothing more than what the title itself implies it to be. The book is divided into four parts: “principles,” “methods,” “forms,” and “attitudes.” The first part is about how to write with simplicity so that the reader will understand by removing unnecessary words and putting the right ones with the right meaning for what is trying to be said. Overall, doing so without having to completely take away the parts that give style to our writing. The second part is about the structure of writing; Zinsser gives helpful information on how writing should begin and how it should end.…

The same recipe follows to create a good written essay, or story. In other words, writing is a process that requires following steps and many rough drafts to accomplish your goals by writing something that’s worth reading. The rough draft is just that, a rough copy of the paper your writing, that you can…

In reading "Ten ways to think about writing" I learned of many new tactics and ideas to use when I approach writing a paper and or article. I learned first that it is very helpful to write about something you know a lot about. In doing so you can fill up your paper with facts and statistical information right off the bat and you also will be much more interested in writing and it will make the "struggle" of writing just disappear. I also learned to give much detail and information in mentioning things whether they be major or minor. Instead of mentioning a green bouncy ball I could mention about the dark green ball that bounces as high as the stars.…

The writing process that has worked well for me has been what I learned in grade school. I usually complete my writing in phases. The first phase in my writing process would be the prewriting phase. During the prewriting phase I take the time to brainstorm, make any lists I will need and even draw pictures that describe what I would like to write about. This helps me to better focus on my organization structure of my paper as well as helping me showcase my ideas more successfully.…

When writing papers, I find it’s beneficial to write drafts. The article by Anne Lamott that I was referring to earlier mentions “Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere. Start by getting something -- anything -- down on paper…the first draft is the down draft -- you just get it down. The second draft is the up draft -- you fix it up.…

Prewriting and outlining would always help but if it is particular things that I would like to write about. Pre writing is the first stage of the writing process, which helps us to get our ideas on paper, though not usually in an organized form, and brainstorm thoughts that might eventually make their way into our writing. Being the fact I do not know much about perfect writing. I use outlining to make a list of my thoughts before writing a paper, which is called clustering.…

As Lamott best says “The first draft is the child’s draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place, knowing that no one is going to see it and that you can shape it later.” (190) I am very comfortable with others reading my work. I take pride in what I write. I do not work slowly. I’m a get it done kind of writer.…

I do not consider myself to be a writer, not in Spanish which in my first native language or English which is my second language. I would say that writing is always about tone, in my opinion if the tone is not there, then there is no writing. Also to do a writing for a certain subject for school I need a certain source of outline, specifications or requirements for important topics to be addressed.…

I’m not like the usual people who write, I don’t have to write. I’m not the person who has to pour his or her soul on the paper just to make it through the day. When I wrote my first screenplay for an eleven minute long short film, I was ecstatic. My over sentimental feelings were finally being released and I could stop bursting out in tears in the slightest misfortune. Since I was younger I had the habit of bottling up my feelings and often would release them at the most inappropriate moments.…

And with the help of Professor Weiner and some inflection I have found my process. I tend to look to experts and other role models to see how it is I need to formulate my writing. My process of discovering this started with the rhetorical precis assignments when I looked to others already completed assignments and I made the best attempt to imitate the format. The assignment I feel made the greatest impact on my discovery of how I write would be the contextual analysis paper.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…
